The best control scheme is the default d-pad and button controls, using Y to run.
This game is an enhanced port of Super Mario 64 DS. Each stage has more star missions, a few new stages, some new bosses, and the ability to play as Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario.
It's a damn blast to play. I remember playing this when I first got my OG DS. (The Silver Brick one). If I wasn't play this or Metroid Prime Hunters [First Hunt] I was playing Pokemon Emerald.
I played the SHIT outta this game. Got all the stars, TWICE. The Minigames are a nice distraction, but I really didn't play them that much...except for Luigi's Casino games.
That man in green knows how to run some MEAN casino games, man.
For fucks sake man, just get DesMuMe and download the .NDS file already, man! Even my potato PC can run DesMuMe competently. (With some games having slowdown every now and then for just a moment)

3DS lets you play it with pseudo analog controls. You can still only move in 8 directions, but it's a hell of a lot more comfortable than the DS layout.

I had a friend that tried to use the wireless controller dongle, and it sucked ass and crapped out in under a month of use.

I always judge ports like that for what they are, and it's pretty good for playing Mario 64 on the go. If you're at home, there's not really a reason to choose it over the N64 version however

It's much better with the original controls, since you can run without having to hold a button and makes certain moves much easier to use.
SM64 makes great use of the analog stick.
Would've been great if it was remade on 3DS.
Again, it's not bad. The few extra levels are nice but then again you have to switch characters in order to get certain stars/use the special caps.
