I played Skyrim and Fallout 3 recently and noticed this recurring problem with Bethesda's idea of storytelling.

Bethesda's so in love with their writing that they'll force you to watch scripted conversations that you can't even interact with in over a third of their quests. Even New Vegas wasn't this bad.

It's ironic because Morrowind was the exact opposite. As they increased their production values, they had to prune a lot of the underlying systems that made their old quest design so open. You can't taunt someone into attacking you, sweet talk more information out of someone, or bribe a bystander into looking the other way unless they specifically intend for you to. For all their talk of Radiant AI and a reactive world, they sure axed a lot of the avenues for immersive roleplaying.

Oblivion was a pretty egregious retcon of the lore. TES has always played it relatively loose but this was the first time that an entire setting was completely rewritten.

Cyrodiil was hinted at in earlier games to be an interesting mix of the late Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. I think the closest visual example that's similar to that is the version of Consantinople that was in Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

This was the real complaint behind why Oblivion felt so "generically medieval." The prior lore described it as completely different, but they went the quick and easy way anyway. It reflects a lack of respect towards your established playerbase when you just rip entire chapters out of your lore like that.

It was only culturally Roman/Byzantine. Aesthetically, it was a mix of what you'd see in Imperial settlements from Morrowind, Mediterranean architecture, and a lot of Akaviri stuff.

We get what? 2 main towns, 3 faction bases (4 if we count the vault since it's similar in size), two or three slightly unique 'settlements' and a dozen shitty 'farms'.

It looks like quite a lot when I type it out yet in game none of it feels connected. With the exception of Diamond City, they're all essentially isolated from the world. Even then, DC is in the middle of a warzone and doesn't seem to have any viable routes for traders to come in and out. I'm honestly surprised they didn't plan any DLC features for the settlements because the state they shipped it in is hilariously shallow outside of the building.

The world design is just fucking awful.

Level scaling out the ass to replace anything interesting. All dungeons are the same unless they're for a quest. You never have any reason to go into a random dungeon, since there is never anything there.

The combat is slow and boring too, worse than Morrowinds once you get the hang of it. Morrowind at least lets you kill things quickly. Scaling in Oblivion made you worse as you leveled up.
The only things Oblivion did alright in Combat were manual blocking and being able to cast with your weapons out.

They were fun weapons to use, good for kitting, strong and trained endurance so you could better control your level ups.

Sawyer did a video on how getting reloading animations to contextually loop for certain guns proved to be very difficult on Gamebryo.

Far Harbor added a lever-action rifle with a looping reload. Except it's not actually a looping reload; it's a regular reload that looks like it loops; no matter how many bullets you have left, the animation will always show you reloading as many bullets as you'd need to if it were empty.

Don't be so negative. People expected too much from Fallout 4 without realizing that their last Fallout game was released in 2008 called Fallout 3 (which also had bad writing). Bethesda was never good at making Fallout games. FNV was from Obsidian.

As for TES series. I personally think Morrowind =/> Skyrim > Oblivion.

TESVI will come out in 2019 atleast. I still have high hopes for this game after watching Todd's E3 2016 interview. Before TESVI, BGS will release two new IPs. One of them is a GTA clone.
