Let's have another Drakengard thread, lads.
What the fuck is the best way of fighting Manah? Bitch got to her insane phase where her attack patterns were ridiculous and I spent fifteen minutes just going back to the invisible wall and occasionally turned around to attack until her health was gone. Also, the soundtrack is still shit.

>>343328856
It has an interesting setting, but the game is fucking horrid.
Does this just not emulate well? The audio is always ahead for me in voiced scenes. I started DoD3 in the meantime and it's pretty cool so far.
>>343329038
>defending three second loops
>>343329215
Just watch a walkthrough of Drakengard 1, you really don't need to put yourself through the absolute suffering that is the first game.
>>343329078
I didn't play it that much and I'm more into western rpgs to be honest.
Not sure if I already played Gothic when I tried the game.
>>343329378
I didn't mind the game, it's not terrible, just really mediocre, the characters make up for it
>>343328015
>Also, the soundtrack is still shit.
get out
>>343329519
>it's not terrible
That alone tells me that you put hardly any time into the game, and that's fine. That means you can still feel happiness.
>>343329773
Ey senpai, how are you liking that chapter four on ground track?
>>343329893
>not liking seizures
It's like you don't enjoy feeling like a psychopath
How the fuck do people not like this game? Its a hack n slash where you get to ride a fucking dragon, plus aerial dogfights on the dragon, its a cool game, you people on /v/ make me sick I swear.
>Caim, you're enjoying this aren't you?
No, I'm not.
>Show them mercy, they have no will to keep fighting!
Then why the FUCK ARE THEY CHARGING TOWARDS ME?Remake when?
>>343330423
It's a hack 'n' slash where you get to ride a dragon and spend fucking forty hours in the castle environs hacking away at 827 enemy soldiers over and goddamn over again.
>>343330532
I feel that the game would be the exact same if they remade it. They got the "feeling kinda odd killing thousands of enemies" tone perfectly, specially with that soundtrack
>>343330828
More like the feeling of extreme frustration from spending nearly an hour mashing square on 1,500 enemies on one big ass field.
>>343330730
>40 hours in castle environs
you literally suck at the game, you can clear all endings except the final within 15-20 hours.
>>343331591
>most weapons require an absurd amount of kills to get to level four
>this is all your fault, you're just bad at the game
>>343332048
You dont have to upgrade the weapons
>>343328856
>it's a shitty dynasty warriors clone
Funnily enough, that's kind of the point. The creator found it strange that games basically celebrated slaughtering thousands of people to catchy rock tunes and pat you on the back, and thought that would be psychopathic.
So he made a game in which it tries to do the exact opposite. Tell you around any corner just how horrible it all is to be slaughtering thousands upon thousands, killing children because they're in your way, and in general going out of its way to make the experience as unpleasant as possible, right down to the visuals and music.
The value in Drakengard is from an incredibly edgy, dark, jaded and cynical artistic standpoint. The value in Drakengard also is from the fact that it goes completely insane, right down to fighting giant space babies with lightning wings and teeth.
Anyone else feel like Arioch feels underdeveloped? She hardly gets any screen time even in her own chapter. She only really chimes in to say "Boy I sure do like eating the flesh of children". Her pact beasts also have maybe two or three lines in the entire game while the fairy and Golem have a good amount.
>>343328015
>>343329235
I don't know why but I kind of like the soundtrack. The repetitiveness of the music goes well with the constant slaughter and overall tone of the game.
>>343329893
I'm just about done getting all the weapons to get to Ending E and I'd say that the gameplay isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. It's functional, just pretty dull most of the time.
Those Free Expeditions where you have to kill every fucking enemy on the map are getting on my nerves though.
>>343335053
That sounds cool. Did they execute it well?
>>343335574
Well nobody but masochists, psychopaths, and nutjobs enjoy playing it, so I'd say so.I've played Drakengard 1 to Ending E three times.
>>343335574

>>343336395
It was meant to sound fucking insane, you know
Is Drakengard 2 worth playing to see just how tonally different it is even if the story isn't as good? I'm thinking of picking it up if I ever come across it at a decent price.
In the meantime, Drakengard 3 should show up at my doorstep tomorrow so I'm excited about that. Aside from the Japanese voice pack of course, what DLC should I get? It seems expensive to get even just all of the story DLC.
>>343335697
I don't know if I could do that. If I spent any more time with it then it would be leveling up all the weapons.
>>343336241
That's good shit.
>>343336547
Nigga, I don't care. No game should sacrifice fun to make a point.

>>343336481
Its better played, just saying.
>>343336637
Weren't we talking about the OST?
>>343336481
The thing is, there's no point in watching it, because levels consist of 20-40 minutes of mashing square button. But there's interesting banter in the middle of the levels, so there's that. Read it on lparchive instead.
Replayed it recently and lost my will to grind after ending C. Inspire me /v/.HD remaster when?
>>343336893
Ending D is some shit. At the very least get to that one.
>>343336778
>>343336797
The problem is that there is no ps3 version available and I'm not that much interested to buy it for ps2 (no offense).
>>343336783
A game's soundtrack can add to the fun of the game. Metal Gear Rising is a good example of this. If that game didn't have its hype as fuck soundtrack people would likely care a lot less for it. Same goes for Nier's amazing soundtrack.

>>343337080
>MGR
>good ost
>babby cant atonal music
lmao
>>343337061
You can buy a PS2 for less than the actual game costs.
>>343337031
Getting all the weapons is such a pain in the fucking dick. Also, the air boss battles are infuriating. Somehow I beat this game as a kid and I do not know how I had the patience.
>>343337080
If you cant see how Drakengards soundtrack adds to the game just as much as MGR or Nier's soundtracks add to their own respective games then you have no place in this conversation. You arent even trying to think.
>>343337080
You know that not everything that a videogame must provide is "fun", specially if trying to make a point, right? Even then, the OST is the entrance to dodecaphonic music, so it's love it or hate it.
>>343337061
I can understand that. You can emulate it, but the quality of emulation differs between people and setup and it can be a really bad experience. That's what I did, DOD1 run od 50-100% speed depending on camera angle and level, but I got all the endings and even grinded few weapons to max level
Or just do it the "safe" way and read an lp.
>>343337385
Read/watching LP is honestly the worst way to experience any game. I dont get people that try to seriously recommend it.
Coming from someone who has watched more than a few LPs and regretted it every time. Games are meant to be played.
>>343337080
As someone who thinks Drakengard is garbage and not worth playing, the soundtrack is fucking awesome
>>343337485
some games are more interesting to watch rather than play. drakengard doesnt happen to be one of them, but it does happen.
>>343337632
I never found one that is. Theres an entire dimension of experience thats lost when you just watch a game. Its never a replacement for actually playing it.
>>343337316
I know why it's shit, it's because they wanted to invoke the feeling of madness or some shit, but I don't care. Shit hurts to listen to.
>>343337378
A game can make a point and that's fine, but sacrificing ALL fun to make your point is not acceptable. I mean I'm already spending hours going through levels killing thousands of people, the least they could have done was give me something bearable to listen to. It didn't even have to be Nier tiers of good, it just had to be something bearable. But no, instead I got something that makes me feel like I am losing my fucking mind. All to make a point.
>>343337290
You only have to get all the weapons for Ending E.
>>343337485
Yeah, playing a game even if it isn't all that interactive like The Walking Dead or something is a completely different experience from watching somebody play it. Drakengard is something that has to be experienced in its pure form in my opinion.
>>343337632
What are some? I guess certain multiplayer games are more fun to watch than play if you aren't good at them but you'd have to have already had some experience playing them most of the time to even know what's happening.
>>343336743
My hero
>>343337819
stop invoking 'fun' as your argument. You've already seen multiple people tell you they enjoyed the soundtrack.
If anything the only thing we can agree on is that you have shit taste. Leave this thread.
>>343337385
Thank you but I think I'm better with a lets play.
>>343338049
Fun is absolutely a valid argument, if your game has nearly no enjoyable parts to it, then most people are likely to not fucking play it, let alone spend forty fucking hours just to get to the final ending.
>>343337861
>What are some?
mostly horror games since im a huge bitch. i typically dont like the mechanics in those games all that much and playing it alone makes me want to die.
>>343336743
Was that in the Japanese version or some side material? I know it's still fairly clear that he's a pedo in the western version (they couldn't censor that gulp in that FMV when Seere dives into his crotch) but I remember no implications of corpse fucking.
>>343338285
People have and been doing it long before you even heard about the game, fucking bandwagoner.
>>343338353
He was jacking off while his brothers got killed, he wasnt fucking any kids.
>tfw people make up all these stories about Drakengard because they dont even bother to play it
its like some twisted game of telephone
>>343338382
You really think the majority of people who played Drakengard went all the way to Ending E?
>>343337819
>the least they could have done was give me something bearable to listen to
Games are not necesarily catering to the same feeling if there's no need, this game tries to make you
>feel like I am losing my fucking mind
and succeeds on every level, since the mere concept of mass annihilation carries that weight. The soundtrack is utterly fantastic on that regard and I like it as a standalone.
If you want mindless mass annihilation with mindless soundtrack for the sake of fun, then there's Dinasty Warriors, nothing wrong with it.
>>343338596
More than enough people did
Reminder it was made in a time where people actually played games.
>>343338504
Did you know that in the Japanese version, the Red Dragon has Caim shit on her chest? Also Verdelet cut off his own cock and ate it! Drakengard sure is crazy!
>>343338736
More than enough being like twelve people? I find it hard to believe there were many players that honestly felt the need to spend hours upon HOURS of their time just to get every weapon.
>>343338991
Then you dont have a fucking clue. But I'll grant that todays games are a little "spoiled" and at best just expect to walk forward to a few cutscenes, so I'm not going to hold it against you.
Not saying Drakengard is the pinnacle of gameplay, but the mentality of the time it was made is completely different than how it is today. And things went over more or less smoothly for it, enough to get a sequel anyways.
>>343339261
todays gamers are a little spoiled*
>>343338991
>>343339261
It doesnt take *that* long to get all of them. A lot of them you just get along the way. iirc theres only a few that you actually have to spend a large amount of time on.
>>343338991
>hours upon HOURS
You get 70% of weapons from the main story, you can get them on your first try. The rest comes from free expeditions and it takes 2-3 hours to get them.
>>343339261
A sequel to the first ending, which was all most players got to because they sure as shit didn't want to spend thirty hours getting all the weapons.
>>343336634
Honestly, I entered the series through Drakengard 2 so maybe I'm a little biased, but I think it's a fine game and story on its own merits, even if it is kind of stereotypically anime.
I also liked the art style.
>>343339543
Ironically its the shittiest game in the series and isnt even acknowledged by most people.
>just got ending d and c which I accidentally
skipped over
>have to collect all weapons for ending e
>don't have to upgrade them so it doesn't seem that bad
>check how many I have, 20 something
>there are 65
>>343338991
I did I just had to be creative and use different weapons to make it fun and challenging.
>Furiae demons best ending as a disclaimer
>>343339486
Takes much longer if you don't look it up, guy. Especially when some of the aerial stages are asking you to beat the stage in under 2:30 with at least 89% health, without using magic, without pressing square, and with a blindfold on.
>>343339719
>>just got ending d and c which I accidentally
>skipped over
You can just watch them again in the chapter menu
>>343339832
no I mean, I accidentally skipped over ending c and did it after d instead of doing them in order.
>>343339678
>>343339543
>>343339261
And even then it isn't truly a sequel to the first ending, given that certain characters exist and certain events must have taken place for Drakengard 2 to exist.
Drakengard 2 came hot off its own unique Drakengard ending that is merely framed off the first ending, with smatterings of other endings plus its own bullshit thrown in for good measure.
>Get every weapon in the game, get some to Level 4
>Do everything up to ending E
>No fucking idea how I managed to do any of it
The gameplay isn't even that bad
>>343339678
The point is Drakengard 2 was a sorta sequel to the ending most people got because most of them didn't want to submit themselves to the torture of searching for sixty-something fucking weapons.
>>343339621
I've enjoyed the "black sheep" of franchises before so I think I'll give it a go if I can find it complete for less than $25. I would just download it to see but my PS2's disk drive is fucked in a weird way. It can read DVDs, PS1 games, and most legit PS2 games just fine but if I try to put one of those blue disk CD games or a burned game in there it makes a horrible grinding sound.
>>343339678
And then the sequel to Ending E is seen as the best in the series and is only getting more and more popular.
>>343330423
The idea of the game is amazing, the execution was the problem
>>343340364
The execution of the game was perfect, what are you talking about? Did you mistake what the idea of it was?
So question. Does grinding Angelus's level up actually help with free missions and such? I know some of the weapons are locked behind areal missions but I'm not sure if it's worth grinding to do.

>For the music in Drag-on Dragoon, we started by extracting phrases from existing classical pieces that would match the game’s atmosphere. Then we took the samples created from having all of these phrases newly performed by full orchestra, and reconstructed them digitally. Boldly yet cautiously layering these phrases that differed in key, tempo, and mood, we chopped and shuffled them to fashion melodies that would be impossible in normal classical music

>>343343226
Most games that try to be art are just that, games that try to be art.
This, on the other hand, isn't really a game that tried to be art. The creator had a question in his head, and explored that question through the medium of cutscenes, music, visuals and gameplay, and it ended up becoming art because of that, rather than art being the end goal.
I think this is why we latch on to Yoko for his madness. It isn't JUST him writing a messed up world for us to explore, or for the funsies. He writes this stuff to explore it as much for himself as any of us, and we hop along for the ride. He thinks of a question, then he thinks of a way to answer that question. Or he creates a question for himself to think about, wondering if it may help him answer another question.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD6xCLlF5dY
It also helps that his madness has attracted some pretty talented people to help realize his vision.

>>343335053
I see the same argument often presented for Spec Ops: The Line and honestly I think people give the developers far too much credit for somehow making their games intentionally unenjoyable to convey a contrarian sentiment.
Poor gameplay makes for a tedious and frustrating experience that detracts from the story rather than add to it - if deliberate, I feel the devs would have had the insight to make the game become progressively more frustrating to match the decent of their characters than having broken mechanics right from the start.
Drakengard's clunky gameplay was as bad as it was because Cavia were a small team lacking experience (which was painfully evident their other titles released at the time). Anything else is ass-covering.
