To be 100% honest, if the game was harder, had parts where people got stuck on, or things like that, then there would be a few more unironic Undertale threads. However, those threads are rare, and most threads are just generals.

But Undertale is good. It was just flavor of the month for 3 months in a row and people kept tasting it over and over until whatever sweetness turned sour, and whoever didn't like it got an overdose of what they could only meme as "tumblr game" for a long time.
The game, for what it was intending to be, (A short little rpg focused on story and characters) did remarkably well, and I found from both a critical and subjective standpoint that it was a good game.

I have to go somewhere so I can give you the rundown.
There was a site that was (still is? Unsure) essentially like kickstarters, except for enterprising women to get into game development, called The Fine Young Capitalists. From the outside, seemingly innocent if not somewhat annoying left leaning beta orbiters with money, but regardless, one woman who got involved called Zoe Quinn either Created a game with their help, or intended to create a game with their help, either way; it backfired, and she sort of attacked the site directly with her friends and whatnot, essentially got the site, or at least a few projects scrapped single handedly.
She destroyed the Fine Young Capitalists, then at the same time, she was having sex with game journalists (and people working at steam greenlight) to get her game "depression quest" both pushed through greenlight, bad reviews squelched, and good reviews botted in. This part was called "Five Guys" and was where the joke comes in, if you didn't know.
Later, some people from 4chan make the connection of Depression Quest, the greenlighting, and The Fine Young Capitalists together and form the first part of what would eventually be called the "Quinnspiracy Theory." So /v/ (and Reddit) went to support the fine young capitalists and essentially saved either the site or one of the projects (I forget) and because of that they had the right to design a video game character.
Bonus: That's how Vivian's relation to Gamergate got started.
The Quinnspiracy, once proven completely correct, was traced back to no less than (you guessed it) 5 guys, and a lot of sites either went silent or backpedaled right before a major press release on every major video game journalism website calling for the "Death of the gaming identity." Look up 'Cuties killing Videogames' sometimes if you want to puke.
Linking Zoe Quinn to a lot of other things led to the name "Quinnspiracy Theory" being dropped, and "Gamergate" being picked up.

No. Undertale is masterful as a tumblr game done right, because all of its social justice elements exist in tandem with the setting instead of usurping it. For example, Frisk is "gender ambiguous" because he's a nameless protagonist whose gender doesn't matter. Mettaton is an analogy for transitioning, and he's also a human-obsessed ghost that merged with a robot so he could become a fabulous celebrity. There's two "homosexual" relationships (how does monster biology work?), and both of them are played for laughs. Murder is condemned by various monsters as a natural reaction to killing their friends and loved ones. And so on.

The BIGGEST problem with this game is the pacing. Whether Toby is a good writer or not is debatable, but fuck is he incapable of not running a joke into the ground. The gags get fucking old, super fast. I think no one enjoyed that section where Alphs interrupts you like every 2 seconds. What was Toby thinking? It discourages replayability. I mean it's not like the gameplay is anything to write home about either. It's a simplistic SHMUP with VERY minor RPG elements.
