The steam controller isn't built like the 360, but it's not meant to be used by kids who don't take care of their electronics. I think valve picked the right parts for their target market.

You can get a SP64, SP64+, or Mako Pad 64 with a GC replacement stick way cheaper then a Hori Mini and have the better stick on a controller with a superior layout and not made for manlet hands.
Though even without the GC stick, those are still overall better due to their better size, shape and layout, with the stick still being an improvement over the original due to being metal.
Hori makes some good products. The Mini 64 is not one. Overpriced, inferior crap people only bought for the brand name, or because they're casuals who wanted the GC stick but couldn't mod their own SP or original N64 controller.

It's hard to stretch your finger across opposing buttons, and literally impossible with the PlayStation Controller's D-Pad being one plastic piece, so you can press Up on the left pad and Down on the right pad.

Note that this is entirely unnecessary, because you can map all the buttons to a normal PS Controller's buttons. The advantage of this is having the Solo Mode (Up-Right and Up-Left) buttons off of the shoulder buttons, and onto face buttons.

I had a red version of this controller. IIRC, my dad's wife bought one of these and it came with pic related; a contraption that allows you to use both rumble pack and memory card at the same time. One of the switches, closest to the label, controlled how intense it vibrated, while the other apparently allows you to either save or rumble. They were thinking utility. RPG games would use both sides and forgo the stick since it was mostly menus. First person games would use the center and the right side. The stick allowed for better control. The Z button also acted like a trigger for first person shooters.
Their idea was to make a controler that would work well with any game instead of forcing game developers to make their game fit the controller. In this way they hoped both the consumer would be happy having the best control for any game and they would attract third party developers since the developers had more control over their game.

The buttons are in the exact same place on the DS4 as they are on the Xbone. There really aren't that many 3D games where the face buttons are more important than the right analog stick because you spend most of your time controlling the camera, unless there's platform jumping involved. In most 3D games the default thumb position will be on the two analog sticks.

Got hyped when I plugged in, got confused when trying to play something, started getting buyer's remorse. Messed with the settings a bit, downloaded a community layout and shit just got ridiculously amazing. Gyro aiming/Multi button presses. Hell I played a roguelike with it for an hour and it was pretty fucking good, just had to remap some buttons and it was pretty easy. Actually came in this thread browsing with the controller but I can't be fucked typing with it yet.
