I enjoy older fast paced fps.
I got Unreal Gold from the steam sale and installed the 227i unofficial patch and HiRes textures as well as Quake and System Shock 2, again with high res textures and several other mods. There is something about the low poly but high res texture world playing effortlessly on my PC in 120 fps in combination with the fast gameplay that appeals to me.
Any hidden gems like these I can enjoy on the cheap? Alive online player base is always a plus.

Well, depends what you want.
A lot of people who enjoyed nuDoom seem to be enjoying the new Hard Reset, it's been made into more of a run'n'gun game, a little more fast-paced but also ultimately easier and more approachable.
Whereas the original one is just brutally difficult at times (to the point of being tedious), but in my opinion at least, I think the original one is better, the new one also suffers from a graphical downgrade, but it isn't that noticeable.

You should really only get games you've had your eye on for at least 2 - 3 months. You probably will not play them otherwise. You should drop Shogun 2 if you normally don't play games like that. You can download a Civ 5 demo to see if you like it first. It let's you play out the first 100 turns of a game. Saints Row IV is fun though I liked the third game more.

Binding of Isaac Rebirth w/ Afterbirth, Faster Than Light, Civ 5 w/expansions and Crusader Kings 2 are fun games to marathon over the weekend. I would only suggest Crusader Kings 2 if you are willing invest time to learn how to play it. You need to know a bit before you can get your games going.

The scifi 4x genre is pretty sparse and rather expensive. Your options:
Distant Worlds - Shitty as fuck UI, lot's of depth though. And I mean that seriously, the UI will make you want to punch someone, hard, repeatedly.
Star Ruler 2 - Very unique, very different, very interesting and refreshing. Not a lot of fun, though. Charisma of a brick. Imagine you go to a restaurant and try like kangaroo for the first time. Interesting taste. Meat, yes. Different. Interesting. Not as good as that juicy cordon-bleu you could have gotten, though.
Stellaris - Sucks balls. Paradox fans are defending it, but it's just straight up bad and lacking content in too many places. Such a huge disappointment. Not interesting, barely any new ideas, just tons and tons of busy-work.
Endless Space - Neat enough for a couple of games, seriously weird UI, shitty RPS combat. Mixed bag, but not bad for 8? bucks.

I'll be honest, I've only played like 30 minutes of Space Engineers but I can tell you that the building is a lot more complicated than Subnautica, and there isn't really any 'objective' to Engineers. Subnautica is a survival game, where you build shit like tools and bases to survive, SE on the other hand is just you build stuff for the sake of building it.
The only reason I bought SE is because they added planets you can explore and build bases on, I found it interesting because I love that kind of shit but I might refund it from my experience so far.
