There's a sale on PSN and Armored Core Verdict Day is on cheap. I've been looking to get into the series for a while but I've heard mixed opinions on this one. Should I go for the older games?
I'm mostly looking for detailed mecha building, heard this series is good as that, so that is one of my biggest criteria. Anyone can offer any advice?

Get ACVD on the PS3, as it's the best balance of framerate (far better than ACV, but a little lagging compared to the 360 version). It also has much more people playing. It' has mech customization, and UNACs, which are AI mechs you can customize and program to do your bidding. Remember Formula Front and Silent Line? It's kinda like that in said regard.

ACVerdict Day is an awkward introduction to the series since it plays differently from the other ACs. It's still a solid game, don't get me wrong, and it has a decent singleplayer.
But if you find any other AC games on sale, they might be more up your alley. In particular, any game except AC Nine Breaker. will give you what you want.

It has more missions than LR for example.
As someone who has played the ENTIRE Armored Core franchise I can safely say that V and Verdict Day are the worst of the main numbered series plus their expanded counterparts. They are not unplayable and add some cool features but are lacking in polishing/optimizing any of their features and the changes to the core gameplay are only about as jarring as the changes to heat amd energy in other games in series so...meh. I got my money's worth on them but somebody just now jumping in is going to have a worse experience.
I recommend AC2:AA (the counterpart to AC2) for PS2 if you want to experience the best of the classic games, or AC4A (counterpart to 4) of you want fucking macross high speed jets with arms shit.

My favorite AC installments are Master of Arena, AC2, AC3, Last Raven, Silent Line, AC4, and AC4A.
Avoid V and VD because after playing the previous ones you will be immensely disappointed.
Alternatively, if you play V and VD before hand, you will have your mind blown at how fucking good the previous ones were.
I think AC3 or Nexus is probably the best place to start. Good middle ground. Most of the games in the franchise have similar gameplay to those two.

Get it if you like spreadsheet simulation with great gameplay and low framerates. Singleplayer is not an engaging narrative but shooting things is really fun.
Disregard the "For Answer is the best game" posters, the game's fun and stylish but it's super simple in both building and fighting.
3rd generation games are also fantastic if you dont mind kinda outdated but complex strafing+bunnyhopping gameplay.

As someone who's played every single AC game, I can say that VD lives up to being at least an 8/10 game, but it has flaws like the framerate being an issue, awkward control issues (I prefer KBM ever since I got into PC mech games) and the online is dead at the moment, unless you have a posse to play with.
