1 definitely feels archaic when compared to 3 and 4 (2 never happened). That said, my memory tells me 1's enemies felt far more challenging than 3's.
It always felt like 3 put so much focus into flashy combos that the majority of its enemies had to be neutered by necessity. It felt like I was juggling lifelesss dolls most of the time.
Which isn't to say 3 is easy. 3 had it's fair share of great fights.
But 1 felt more consistent, in that each enemy felt unique and dangerous in its own way. The shadow cat, the lizard knights, and the goat-headed scythe thing always tested my limits, and playing on dante must die mode was a real treat.

Fuck off you're on normal nothing is poor about it. The first goat head in the sewer is kinda a faggot but otherwise everything ramps up fine and normal is pretty god damn simple.

this gets really bad on DMD
i think dmc3 is the only dmc game where the later difficulties make the game worse
