Its a straight up Metroid like game and not Metroidvania. That means it has no RPG elements like leveling, stats and item hoarding. Its just like the original Metroid games with challenging platforming, action and heavy focus on exploration.

Bloody amazing. I'm an oldfag and I've played the original one's when they were actually released, and the special editions are worth the money. Great voice acting, nicely re-recorded soundtrack, HD graphics are pretty too. You can switch seamlessly to the old art via the press of a key, if you dig the pixel style.

Enemy AI cheats, you'll frequently have grenades come raining over walls and buildings in middle of your squad, poor balancing technical limitations such as aliens being fucking invisible on staircases and becomes an iphone air control game midway through.
