The extra noise is also a big advantage for Team AMD, it'll help drown out any fighting cats nearby or when your parents come down to ask when you're getting a job, dramatically improving your gaming experience.
>With Tom's Hardware reporting that the RX 480 draws (substantailly) more than the 75W allowed from the motherboard (for example, the PCI Express high-power card spec allows a mazimum of 66W to be drawn from the 12V pins of the PCI Express slot, and the RX 480 averages 79W from the 12V lines alone) AMD seems to be violating the PCI Express(R) spec. Of course, I'd love to see HardOCP try to duplicate Tom's results.
>According to the licensing contract for the spec, if they do not fix this within 3 months, AMD will NOT be able to call the card a PCI Express card. If they do, they face not only litigation, but if my understanding is correct an action before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban the importation of the card as counterfeit goods. You might think the PCI-SIG will give AMD a pass, but if they do, they risk loosing the trademark entirely. An unforced trademark gets invalidated. The SIG won't let that happen.
>So what does this mean to the consumer? I think there are two possibilities, if we assume AMD will not choose to remove the PCI Express logos from these cards: Either they will alter the boards to have an 8-pin socket and to pull more power from there, or they will neuter the card to ensure it doesn't draw more power than the PCI Express specification allows. I don't see any other options.

Obviously.
I bought my 970 G1 for 396$ two years ago.

So a 88$ discount on performance I had for the last two year doesn't seem particularly exciting.

Honestly though, you're better off buying the 4GB version @ $200. The 8GB version is absolutely worthless and only exists to fleece people who buy into the VRAM/Higher numbers marketing as it doesn't help with performance at all at higher resolutions >>343189614
A card that performs that bad has no use for VRAM that high.
>>343192624

As a 290x owner i've had that level of performace since 2013. These days my 290x now fights a 980.
What you have to realize is that a lot of people have the 970. It being the #1 card on Steam for example.
And a lot of the AMD fans are sitting on the 290(X) or Fury series
There is literally no reason at all to buy a 480 when they have one of the mentioned cards above. Even older cards like 960, 770 is not even worth the upgrade.
If people want something new and refreshing there is literally only the 1070 and 1080 available right now.

This card was never marketed toward enthusiasts who spend 600 dollery doos on a new card ever year or so. I think it falls right where it needed, the people that have dated cards that don't want to wait another two years for price drops on cards that can already do 1080p60.

yeah if only it were superior in any other way. even controller supported games need you to get up and use your mouse to click okay on dialogs and separate configuration programs dont work with controllers either (sonic generations comes to mind). boy i sure do love installing fan patches just to play dark souls with a camera resolution higher than 240p or having four separate software clients just to play all my videogames. sure while pc has multimonitor support its broken, every other game opens only on monitor 0 so you need to turn it off anyways. and once you do the game cant find monitor 0 so refuses to start because settings dont match or some shit (also sonic generations for an example). seems like not even singleplayer games are designed to allow you to get comfortable at all. always have to sit in an uncomfortable office chair and wait until you get into a game before you can even lay back down for fucks sake
I hear people saying we can't notice the difference between 30 and 60 fps.
But when I'm playing WoW I can notice the difference between 120 fps vs 60 fps or under

It depends on what resolutions and framerates you're going for. GTX 1070 is built for 1440p or 144hz gaming. If you have a monitor like that then go for it. If you're playing at 1080p 60fps, then the 1070 is overkill.

"VPS represents the amount of frame render requests the emulated CPU sends to the emulated GPU in Dolphin. FPS represents the amount of frames that are actually rendered."
60 frames are called for per second, however only 30 are displayed
same thing that dsfix did
i can turn and twist a few knobs and actually have it output 60 fps (or more), but that would cause glitching, not to mention the game would run at twice or quadruple speed.
>>343195169
>serious question, why the hell are people still using 1080p monitor in the year 2016?
Because I have 2x high quality 1920x1200 screens, and that's still good enough until the REAL upgrade happens, which to me is 5k. I want 2560x1600 HiDPI (so 5120x3200 true), at least true 10-bit (preferably 12-bit) color, and preferably 90 Hz. All the tech for that is getting very, very close to coming together at long, long last, it'll only be another year or two given that we've already got 5K displays shipping in multiple places, the color is being pushed by UHDTV (hooray for Rec.2020), and VR is pushing refresh.
Since displays are easily the longest lived part of a setup I'm completely fine to wait until they're a true massive leap and then pull the trigger on quality stuff. I've got $6000 waiting, just a little bit more. I'm so happy that at long, long last display tech is moving forward all at once again, there was a huge period of stagnation in the 00s after LCDs became standard where it just sat at the exact same max res, color and refresh in the mainstream and even pro markets.
Fuck I'm pumped. What a great time.
>>343191637
If you have the 4GB 770GTX you're still fine, if you can play on lower settings if it's not atleast 60 fps.
The 2GB needs some updating, but is still fine if you use a slightly lower resolution on most modern games.

Nvidia is going to get cucked. The battle is fought and won on the low-mid tier range ($100-200), anything more and you are targetting a very small niche market and will be lucky to even claw back your R$T costs.
What AMD needs to do now is to make sure their driver support is up to scratch, so the card "just werks". Then they can mass flog it at your average "gamers" running 1080p on mediums (in a pre-built mind you) and they will be rolling in cash.

While most situations in gaming will never go above 3.5gb of ram for 1080p, it CAN happen in some situations. For example, pic related. The player climbed really high and looked down. The card would then have to keep rendering wandering NPCs until it fills up 3.5gb of ram. That is when it has to access the cucked .5gb of ram and then the card shits itself. Frames drop like bricks.
> in b4 ass creed suck, can't do garbage collecting
That's not the fault of the game. The video card reports that it has 4gb of ram to the mobo, OS and game. So anything 4gb of ram is fair game to use up.

For a starter PC a RX480 is a good start but it depends on where you live. Apparently according to all the Euros in this thread, it makes sense why they are mad, they are getting way overcharged for the RX480 so a GTX 970 is probably a better choice

If you're fine settling for that that's cool, it meets your needs. But you (or whoever it was) asked why we weren't on 4k in 2016 and I told you. 4k is a shitty in-between step. I'm not investing a penny in that.
>>343190897
MultiGPU, if you're doing it right, will outperform any single GPU available by a significant margin.
The whole point of multiGPU is "I can't get a single GPU fast enough to meet my performance needs".
Unless you're upgrading an old rig though. If you have a 270x, throwing a second 270x in there will bring you up to 290x performance levels which can be a nice boost for the cost of a used 270x.

Before my monitor shit on me it was the default screen, monitor 0. This would autamagically switch it to my tv whenever I started big picture and switch it back when I closed big picture.
I will say that choosing the right setting is fucky at best. They were both generic 1080p monitors so it took a few attempts to select the right one. For some reason they didnt stay in the same order, probably because it was switching the default monitor which is always at the top of the list I guess.
So unless they changed something in the last 3 months it should work fine anon.

>That's not the fault of the game. The video card reports that it has 4gb of ram to the mobo, OS and game. So anything 4gb of ram is fair game to use up.
Yeah, the devs optimize for what is reported, they don't (and shouldn't) try to figure out if the hardware is somehow fucking lying to them. It'd be bad coding if it tried to use 5 gigs and that shat itself or something, the devs of course need to make sure it scales to whatever VRAM the card has. But if the card says "yep, it's cool to use 4 gigs" that shouldn't come with a million gotchas.
>>343197510
4k has 4 times the working area of regular 1080. Sure you might be ad adventage with 2x monitors, but who's to say you couldn't have 2x 4k monitors? The benefit of 32" is that the PPI is same as 23" 1080 monitor, so there's literally very little scaling required. If you were to get 5k monitor, you'd have to have a 40" or larger because the PPI will be too high for windows.

Are you fucking serious? I said specifically I plan to just use 2x scaling, so a 5120x3200 screen would give me a general 2560x1600 working area, except at HiDPI resolutions. Gaming is only a secondary usage for me. This is not something that's an issue in 2016, or earlier for that matter. x2 PPI screens have been shipping in even consumer products for a while.

programs at least on windows 7 open on the screen they were last used on. if you moved steam over to the other monitor and opened big picture mode it would open there too. this has nothing to do with monitor order, it doesn't change that. if you opened the resolution screen like you were changing monitor resolution you could see your monitor's labels without a way to change them and that is just that problem and not even really the big point i was making either, which is that it isn't an option to get comfortable while playing pc games since there are no universal standards

22 months.
If you bought a 980 when it came out, you paid around $600 after taxes et all.
The $200 480 actually offers very similar performance to a stock GTX 980.
Here's some of eurogamers benchmark data at 1080p
The Division: 55 FPS for 480, 58 for 980.
The Witcher 3: 61 FPS for 480, 66 for 980
Crysis 3: 70 FPS for 480, 75 for 980
FC Primal: 58 FPS for 480, 63 for 980.
So basically the 480 is within spitting distance of the 980 performance in less than 2 years for 1/3 the cost of the 980 on release.
So in terms of cost effectiveness, you can either pay $200 every 2 years or you can pay (total of $400 over a 4 year period) or you can pay $600 and upgrade once every 4 years. In the first half you'll have better performance, in the second half you'll have equal performance. You're paying a $200 premium to have better performance within the first 2 years. (And keep in mind, when it came out the 980 was overkill for 1080p. Your $200 280 could run most games in the same performance bracket as the 480 runs modern games.)
For some people that's worth it, but for 90% of the market it isn't.
>>343199278
about 350% more
>>343198672
No it's done, was published in March, but 1.4 is basically a software update of 1.3, has stuff like new lossy compression modes, more inline audio channels, and updates for compatibility with the new BT.2020 color space (which is the standard for UHDTV). But it doesn't provide any major fundamental bandwidth leap, no new transmission modes, so we're still on HBR3 from DP 1.3, ie 32.4 Gbps.
It's going to be harder from here though, we're really starting to push the limits of what copper can handle for any significant distance in a flexible cable package. I know Intel is working on Thunderbolt 4, and apparently they might be able to squeeze it to 80 Gbps, and that really would be enough display-wise. But no word on cable lengths, and TB has to use active compensation chips so cable prices will definitely go up if they go that route. Interconnect is going to remain a challenge until silicon optics really hits mainstream and copper can be dumped for data IO (I expect we'll still see copper jacketed or composite with optical for the purposes of power).

Its worth for americans but for europeans, hell fucking no, and 300 is the reference card anyway, so the actual one what I would buy will probably around 340, and thus it doesn't worth at all.
>>343198971
>compressing is sort of easy mathematically
Compression is not the answer for a PC display. A PC display needs to display even incompressible content without artifacting, lossy is not acceptable.
So yeah, we'll need at least one more round of bandwidth boosts. It looks like we'll probably get it though, we'll just be limited on cable length.

Basically it sounds like you want monitors that are "sharper". I think you can't have both, if you go for ppi everything will look small on windows, if you go for screenspace the sharpness is not much better, but the screenspace is literally 4 times more (provided monitor is big enough to not need scaling). >I'm still confused how you will manage to get more screen space than your current setup AND definition.
Because as I said, I'm currently on multiple 1920x1200 displays, running 1:1 obviously.
>If you're scaling, aren't you throwing away both the definition and the screen space?
No? I'd be getting 2560x1600 equivalent for text content, and still have the 5k for 1:1 content. You need to look up how HiDPI displays are used, seriously. It's the same principle as on a decent phone or tablet made in like the last half decade. Or you could look at how Apple handled it back in 2012 with their notebook, and they had a pretty early attempt:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review/6
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6008/windows-8-on-the-retina-display-macbook-pro
Things have improved since on all platforms. Critically, note how backing is NON-GLOBAL, as in you can display both 1:1 and scaling at the exact same time. So you can have an image/video editor be showing 1:1 in the window while all UI elements, text and so forth are sharp.
>Basically it sounds like you want monitors that are "sharper". I think you can't have both
Of course you can have both. That's why I want 5k, or better, so that I can have clean x2 scaling and still have more screen space then I've got right now.

No it doesn't - windows 7 still has too big of a marketshare to ignore and that has no DX12 support. I don't know what you're talking about now. HiDPI has nothing to do with screen size, except the limits of manufacturing (which is why it started in handheld, then went to notebooks, then 20-30", and continues to move up, and why at the start of all this I said I'm still waiting another few years).
And as far as "space" please go actually read at least that first Anandtech link, even though it's very old. Even back then, they give a photo application (Aperture) as an example showing non-global backing, as-in you can fit a large image on the screen at 1:1 while still having sharper interface which is useful for text particularly if you use non-English character sets. A 2880x1800 15" screen is better then a low DPI 15" panel.
>>343204006

You honestly have no idea what you are talking about. DX11 is not "fine" - why the fuck do you think EA spent so much time (through DICE) backing Mantle in the frostbite engine, it was all to prepare them for the likes of vulkan/DX12 because of the possibilities those APIs have in relation to hardware.
