I actually saw an interesting documentary about China ripping off things. Part of Chinese and Confucian culture is about learning from a "master" and imitating them, it's seen as a good thing. It even extends to their schooling system, everything is built around rote learning and even straight up using each others essays. It can produce smart individuals who have great knowledge on their subject but it ruins their creative thinking.

While this is true, there is a difference between general danger and reckless danger.
When you go to Africa you know places there are undeveloped and can take necessary preparations. You know to avoid certain wildlife, you know to keep your hygiene in check, you know to stay away from troublesome places with apparent criminal activity.
In China it's different because of its high development in infrastructure and tech you assume that it's much safer. In some ways it is of course, you don't have to worry about unchecked disease or gun violence. But instead you have to worry about the amount of care the average citizen has and the structural integrity/ safety protocol of buildings and every day devices. You have to worry about the very air you breath due to tuberculosis in china being an ever present issue. Even some cases where food from vendors and certain restaurants are an issue.
Once again not saying Africa is better than China but you can at least anticipate the danger in Africa.
