The problem with ZTD is that the cast is really bland. We already know half of the characters and their motives before the game even begins. Akane, Junpei, Sigma and Phi don't have any secrets and they act just as we expect them to. There is no mystery. Out of the new characters, Carlos, Eric, Diana and Sean have no secrets nor ulterior motives. All character development they get is superficial. Mira was hiding something but in the end she turned out to be just another shallow character. She is a psycho mass murderer. That's it. That's the whole point of her character. She goes around killing people because that's what she does.
In 999, all characters besides Junpei were hiding something. There was a meaning behind every single one of them. They all felt somehow related to the story in the end. They had unexpected pasts, unexpected relations, they acted unexpectedly. There were no meaningless deaths.
The characters and their interactions in ZTD are just... disappointing. I didn't want to see Akane act like Akane. I didn't want to see Carlos act like a superhero who tries to save everyone. I didn't want to see Mira murder people just because she likes murdering people. I didn't want to see Uchikoshi lose his touch.

I do for both JP and English dub.
I like VLR dub better than its JP counterpart but ZTD English dub just took a massive dive in overall quality.

But seriously though, those 8 are way less fleshed out, dull and boring than the cast in VLR or ZTD. You could argue all you want that the plot as less inconsistencies or whatever and you liked the atmosphere more, but the only SOMEWHAT developed characters Ace, Junpei and Akane (and the last one is still lacking since we don't get a glimpse of her true personality until VLR). The rest just plain suck, don't have enough time or are just one-dimensional.

Every part of the VLR-timeline ending was way more powerful than anything else in the game.Which, if you think about it, isn't a surprise; the late-but-not-final ending is always the most powerful. Safe ending and Luna END aren't the final parts, but they're more powerful than their games' respective True Ends.

I'd disagree, but only too a certain extent. The characters in this game are real people. As opposed to the engram and plot device created characters in the other games, which was very enjoyable regardless, these characters were created to be characters, that didn't fit into a simple stereotype. Mira may be a killer, but it comes from not malice, but a desire to be normal and understand people. Diana and Eric are complex characters in their own right without being designed as the punchline for a twist. They may not be as shocking or as memorable as some other characters, but they are just as real and fleshed out. And if you say that you didn't like Carlos as a superhero, I can't help you. It's not clear yet. The original nonary games used the same robe that Free the Soul later uses. We don't know if the cult is older than previously explained or if Brother simply borrowed the design. It is very likely that Brother took part in one of these earlier nonary games, because guy who ran these games died the same year as Brother started the cult.
