Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.
The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.
alternatively just use a software renderer for very 1:1 PS1-like graphics, including 240p only.
...OR just buy the game from PSN Store for few bucks.

It annoys me that people are just skipping SH1 when they start playing the series for the first time. I know SH2 is considered to be the best by most SH fans, but that doesn't mean SH1 is optional garbage. I imagine it's mostly the younger gamers who can't stomach the older visuals, but they're really missing out on a great adventure.

Same here. SH1 is still my absolute favorite of the bunch, it's just so well designed and offers great atmosphere, pacing, best town design, and obviously it also is the starting point of everything in the series.

Almost certainly, yeah. Which is fucking stupid, since the game represent some of the best 3D visuals and art-design on PS1. Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous audio work creates that haunting atmosphere.
Other reason why people might be skipping #1 is because SH2 is so over hyped everywhere, and you know how much kids these days love to skip as many games in series as possible to get to the "best" / latest title.

It's the USA version of the PS1 original SH1.
PAL is the European version.

release order, Medium difficulty at least, lowered Brightness, and replaying the games multiple times is very recommended. Also, don't try to kill everything you see. Just leg it / turn off the light and walk quietly past enemies whenever possible.

I don't know how you guys play horror games, call me a little bitch but I just can't.
I started playing SH2 and even right at the beginning just walking through the game left me with this harrowing fear, everything just felt and looked so dark and deranged, it's immersive as fuck but it the game feels like it bring me into such a fucked up and dark world that I just can't handle it.
I wish I could play these games, they seem so cool.
