I loved playing as Gwen. I saw lots of people complain about Velvet before but her only detraction for me was her "fast travel" swinging with the chain. But Gwen though, WEW LAD. Once I got down how to play the game, no one compared. Cornelius was a machine of destruction, I hated playing Mercedes, and Oswald was okay. Overall, the game felt repetitive as fuck, and this is coming from someone who platinum'd DC and bought all the Muramasa DLC. Gorgeous game overall though. Oh, and for people looking to get all trophies, after you watch the true ending there's an extra bit after the "Fin", so just let it keep rolling for the Curtain Call trophy.

I just didn't find Mercedes very interesting. The other characters seem a lot more dynamic; Mercedes doesn't really do much other than eventually become a vaguely competent ruler.

It's a re-master in the truest sense of the word. The game's combat has been re-worked from the ground up to work similar to Dragon's Crown/Muramasa. Inventory management, alchemy and phozon skills have all been streamlined. I'd say the game is a good 20-ish hour long depending on how thorough you want to be.
Just look up some footage if you're still in doubt.
