A solid game is a solid game, no matter when it comes out.
If it came out today it would probably be more praised than it is for defying the norm for shitty indie devs
I hate to be pedantic, but that's kind of a hard question to answer considering that Cave Story was a major influence on indie games for years to come, for better or worse. If Cave Story hadn't been released before, indie games to this point would be very different, and """our""" attitudes and opinions regarding them would be very different.
That said, I tend to judge games pretty mechanically, so I would like to think my opinion would be pretty much the same.
