1. Learn Kanji. It is very important. This is not like Korean where they're phasing out Chinese characters and you can do everything with the local writing system.
2. If you don't know that much Japanese yet, you'll have a difficult time trying to get through most games, even simple one.
3. Try Rockman.exe. A bunch of that game is loan words (プラグイン and stuff like that) and the Japanese is simple enough so children can read it. Alternatively, pick up a game for a shounen anime you've seen like Dragon Ball Z or Yugioh. I've been playing Yugioh Tag Force Special and it's pretty easy since the game features furigana and the kanji used are simple ones, usually voiced anyway.

I'm 400 kanji into Remembering the Kanji by Heisig. Like others will tell you, it doesn't teach you any vocab or readings, so you aren't really learning any japanese. But it will teach you how to identify and differentiate the characters, which can make the whole process so much easier to swallow. I see words with kanji I recognize now, and I can easily remember or even guess the meanings.

There are lots of Chinese video games, e.g. Xuan-Yuan Sword, but they're written in Traditional Chinese. There are also many Chinese animated series, but they're often just ripoffs of Japanese or American shows, e.g. Astro Plan, Chinese Gundam 00. Anyway, you can probably get a job easier with Chinese.

The reason people say years is because experience matters. It helps in solidifying what you've already learned. You can be as autistic as you want, but the moment you lapse you're likely to forget a whole lot. Whereas hearing and speaking for years means you can pretty much retain most of what you've learned so long as you expose yourself to it on a minimal basis at least.
That being said, a year or two is probably all you'll need. Just keep at it though, because again, it's fresh in your brain. I've had a slow climb over a period of 4 years, so there are some words I can't possibly forget, no matter how long I stay way from Japanese.

The thing is, that's sort of true. Even native speakers don't have the greatest working knowledge of nuance, and they've been exposed to their native tongue all their lives. I'm at the point where I have to take a linguistical approach to English grammar just to push beyond my plateau. I can't imagine what it'd be like for someone who learned English later. There's a big difference between having a working knowledge and being able to conceptualize intuitively. However true, though, if people are brandishing that discourage others, that's really dumb.
You clearly have some aptitude for language if you learned that much Spanish in such a short span. Even if you don't have the advantage of learning a language in the same language family, I think you'd be able to pick things up relatively quickly. Certainly less that a year.

No, Korean is not the same. In Japan Kanji have something called Onyomi which is basically middle Chinese. Almost all Kanji have both a Chinese and Japanese reading. Furthermore, Chinese words (Kango) make up most of the language. Korea has nothing like that.

Basically Japanese used to be prevalent in Korea, but when they adopted their own shit, they still used loanwords from Japan.
So even though Hangul supports better pronunciation with words like Juice or Mayonaise.

Anyway, there is a LOT of Japanese media. You don't think that Nintendo translates its games in house, do you? They hire white people for that. Also, actual books, car manuals, computer instructions, et cetera.
