The odd story is just the icing on the cake. The real fun comes from the various playstyles and how absurdly OP you can become.

I was told this was an RPG but instead I got a brown and grey FPS where you just follow objective markers. Literally Call of Duty for /v/ hipsters. I paid $1.00 for it but I still feel ripped off.

It's hard to get into because the developers are absolute fucking madmen who could barely speak french, let alone english
But once you understand it, it's a genuinely deep and complex shooter RPG with a lot of unique ideas, and multiplayer is a blast

It has been a long time since I play it, but what I remember is that it felt dated even back in 2011, the gameplay was shit, the game was confusing and boring as fuck. It takes you a long time to get it and when you do it doesn't really get any better.

No it hardly has a story, it's just that what little story exists is a virtual meme.
People like it because it's like serious sam but with an upgrade system that lets go at game breaking speeds with your robot legs (as long as they're OK).
It also has some of the best shot gun mechanics in vidya.
