I've played through the Japanese version.
30 hour play time with doing as many side PAs as I could find.
The characters are fine. The story is relatively OK. The music is fine. I like the lack of prompts during expositions, which makes the conversations feel natural. I like the seamless transitions from battle to movement.
I can deal with the limited types of enemies. I can deal with the limited number of environments and maps.
But I cannot forgive that party member AI. I cannot condone having six members in a battle party if four of them literally stand still doing absolutely fucking nothing for 10 to 20 seconds at a time.
It's not out in Europe yet.
I have it pre-ordered though, I've never touched the series before but I saw a webm of the titty mage casting za warudo and figured it looked fun.

I'll preface this by saying I play ps1 and ps2 rpgs more than anything else and like the first three star ocean games just fine.
It's good. Not great, wasn't expecting a GOTY, but it's pretty good 4 hours in. Lighter on the cutscenes than I imagined but the in game scenes are growing on me. The combat is just what you'd expect, and I love it, always have. Environments feel very ps2 jrpg in that there isn't much of anything there to interact with, but I think they look really great. So far, as a dumb fucking weeb, I'm having a solid 7/10 experience. Can't wait to romance the titty witch.

I have a high tolerance for a lot of trash in JRPGs if the battle system is good enough, being that the battles are the things which players actually do as opposed to watch.
Put it this way. Add one point out of ten to whatever you would rate SO4, then subtract two if having a lot of redundant shit to grind is what matters most to you in this kind of game.
Therefore, for me, SO5 is a 6 while SO4 is a 5.

She's a weird character. I've only played a bit so far, but she's been all business despite her retarded outfit.
I'm playing it and enjoying it more than I thought. I don't care for how they did cutscenes but gameplay-wise it's pretty good. And the childhood friend is voiced by a seiyuu who consistently does best girls like Karen and pic related.
