I don't get it, GOG had much better sales for thier Summer Sale two weeks ago than Steam does now, yet everyone still gives Valve more money for the same thing. Why?

GOG is easily #2 to Steam, but why can't it catch up? I want to know why you like GOG less.

Because Steam was the first to establish itself as a digital distributor and people have had more experience using it and thus trust it more.

People tell me that Valve games are great because you can make money off them with cosmetics.
But if it were that easy, how come everybody isn't doing it? How come money is even a problem with people on this board?

Also, how much money was spent obtaining that cosmetic in comparison to what that person made back?
>>
>>343110050
The client itself IS DRM. You can't install games without downloading said client (which again, also forces updated on you want them or not).

Compare that to GOG where you can later on choose if you want gets updated versions AND don't need to download any client of the sort in order to download the game.
>>
To GoG shills: would you use steam if you could download games you bought from a webpage running steam's store without having to install steam.

Note that not every game on steam uses DRM, and you can copy your installation to a different computer and run it without having steam installed.
>>
>>343109454

DRM = any management scheme that takes the software management away from the end-user in some manner. iTunes is DRM. Steam is DRM. Windows Store is DRM, Google Play is DRM, every walled garden is DRM in some form.

DRM means the game cannot run without getting checked by software. There are plenty of games on steam that don't do this. Sure, you have to install Steam to actually get the games, but who cares? Steam is a decent program and you're just being autistic by complaining about using it.

a) But makes itself needed in all sort of parasitic ways that makes it hard if not impossible to do away with it. See updates for one.

b) It *is* the tool by which DRMs is being enforced, and can be at the drop of a switch, even after you already paid for the product. The client itself of course, is a DRM because of the activation and account tying.

>>343110268

I'm not a "GOG shill". I think GOG is less bad than Steam. Doesn't mean I have much love for it.
And to be quite frank the only thing I want is not to have a company hold any power over games I paid after I paid for them. Optimally I could still buy a game retail and never have to install that shit. Steam or any copycat.

If Valve offered a service that didn't tie you in any way to its service infrastructure. I *might* use it. Pending EULA/TOS.

Same as GOG then.

>cloud saves

>trading cards (free money back for no effort)
>achievements

>all of my friends already use it

I might be an oldfag here, but that's what young players care bout ? What's the point of tracking time (also done on GOG actually), achievements or muh friends ?

From what I saw, most cards are worth fucking nothing, how poor are you to be attracted to that ?

Cloud saves might be a point, but I can just make my own backups with a few scripts and upload them wherever I want.
>>
>>343097219
Seconded. The publishers should have to update the games to run on modern oses if they want to sell the games.
>>
>>343097219
Meanwhile Steam just has games that don't even work (or just have lot of problems) on W7 and newer and nothing is done about it.
>>
I'm just sick of signing up for loads of bullshit honestly.

I don't want to run proprietary launchers for shit, if your shit isn't on Steam, I seriously don't give two fucks.

I'm sick of signing up for stuff, seriously though. It's fucking old now I've been doing it for like 20 years on pc, I'm done signing up for every little thing.

Any company that tries to stray away from steam with their own bullshit program/launcher/store can just fuck off then.

That new unreal game will never be important or relevant at all whatsoever until it's on Steam, without their little shit launcher.

All Ubisoft and EA games are worthless garbage to begin with but even moreso if they require origins/uplay.

FUCK off with your extra shit I gotta sign up for.

I've been on Steam for 10 years. I enjoy having all my games in one place.

>cards are worth fucking nothing
I've probably made like $40 or $50 from selling cards, and that's from spending like $300. Say cards are worthless if you want, but they aren't.

Hell, I got a foil Lightning card when I bought FF XIII and someone bought it for $8. That was almost the entire price of the game.

>>download it and play

Yea, right after you wait 15 minutes for it to install.

I don't get it, Origin had much better sales for thier Summer Sale two weeks ago than Steam does now, yet everyone still gives Valve more money for the same thing. Why?

Origin is easily #2 to Steam, but why can't it catch up? I want to know why you like Origin less.

It has to do with AO rating. Big platforms don't sell AO games, Hatred is pretty much an exception to the rule and even that is limited to Steam.

You won't find eroge on Steam or GOG or consoles ever.

VNs with nudity and sex are also censored to all ages versions on Steam and only then can game devs provide uncensor patch.

I buy GoG games and run them through Steam because all of my friends are on Steam and that's how I stay in touch with them. I loathe Facebook and only use it to communicate with family and faculty/colleagues so Steam is as close to a social network as I care to get.

Also, it's pretty convenient because I can log in on my craptop and play something over the cloud that I was doing on my desktop when I travel.

It's not perfect and all I've bought on this sale is Banner Saga 2, but there are reasons to use Steam beyond just the sales. GoG is great for old games though. I've bought SO many old games I don't have access to anymore through them. I replayed one of my favorite point-n-click's, Journeyman Project 3, through GoG recently and up until their release the game was un-fucking-playable on modern PCs.

Don't get me wrong, i don't care if the game is about killing innocent people, hell i loved Postal 2 and its expansions but Hatred is just a shitty game that's both boring and terribly optimized and on top of that it drags negative attention to your store. I wouldn't sell it either if i were them
>>
>>343096772

Past Steam sales were a bigger deal -- they had mini-games, sweepstakes, new deals every day, and (in the more recent pre-2016 sales) new deals every eight hours.

If Steam continues to have sales like this one -- with no mini-games, no give-aways except trading cards, and worst of all static discounts (which also happen to be less impressive, on average, than typical daily deals of past years) -- the hype will die down accordingly. It won't completely go away, because Steam has a huge community of users who all use a client with a built-in store, and Steam sales are more accessible to those users than any other sale requiring a web browser to see. However, the days of "OH MY GOD IT'S THE STEAM SALE EVERYONE GO NUTS" are pretty much over.

Kinda this, although I'm more of a GOG user. All I need is to download the game and play, I don't care about client features or "muh everything in one client".

Win key + S -> game name is faster than launching a client, or even popping its window if you let clients launch at startup, which I don't since I don't like to have things pointlessly wasting resources.
>>
>>343118482
That's true. Some people seem to spend far more time collecting rented games than actually playing them. In a sense, Steam is the game. They get the satisfaction of completing a whole IP collection although they will never take the time to complete the games themselves.

It also happens on GoG, but steam pushes the thing further with badges or trading cards.
