Gems aren't really going to be a big deal til endgame if you wanna do secret bosses, til then just go for Topple Up or resist/spike def types to suit certain bosses.

I got super into it right when you start off with Reyn and make it to Bioni's Leg. If that giant open area waiting to be explored doesn't tickle your butthole, it may not be your kinda game.
