While I agree, they are probably doing it to allow for some proprietary protection. Obviously there is a gimmick to it, and they don't want to give Microsoft and Sony any more time they can use to copy that gimmick than is necessary. The risk as I see it though is that they are fighting an uphill battle to gain back the market they've lost over the course of this generation as well as the previous one, while also trying to sell their existing remaining market on purchasing another console from them after the dumpster fire tier management of the Wii U. Whether to retain those who stuck with Ninty this generation and draw back those who have already departed, Ninty needs to get something out there to build up some hype. BoTW was a good start. I was skeptical as hell about it going into E3, and while I'm completely on board with it now, my current plan is to buy it for my Wii U. Until Ninty convinces me the NX is going to be respectable, and not another Wii U, I have no plans to buy one. And that's a problem. That shouldn't be how I feel, but there is no one to blame for that but Nintendo.

The problem with the Wii U is that it was announced way too early. It allowed the game press to spread all sorts of lies and omissions about the console and create this all encompassing feeling of disappointment for everyone.
Not announcing the NX until later in the year is actually a good move for them. It will guarantee that no game gets delayed, that the gaming media will NOT have time to damage control whatever they're doing, and they'll have Zelda ready and waiting to come out at launch, guaranteeing that the 'no games' argument won't be taken seriously by anyone.

When that was proven untrue, critics claimed 'no games' was why you shouldn't have one.
