Mogeko castle was alright. shame Deep Sea Prisoner cant really make decent combat in his games.
I thought the Crooked Man was good freeware example.

Squegs World and Squegs World 2 and the spinoff series Castle of Nepto 1, 2 and 3 are phenomenal.
They're all in Japanese though but there's translation patches online.
