You need to assume that is something that works both with smartphones AND the playstation 4 game system.
Obviously sony would NOT allow a nintendo software to run on their system unless they had no choice in the matter.
Add this to the fact nintendo LOVES a second screen, and my logical conclusion, given this rumor is true is that the gimmick is that the nintendo NX is also a webserver of sorts, and the "second screen" is basically anyone that connects to the same network as the NX and access its webpage, that would be serving a realtime local stream with 1080p or so.
And as we're talking about a webserver here, it would be very possible that the system supported a lot of devices at once, allowing for example that several people at a party connected to it to play the same game at once.

The PS4 and Xbone using conventional x86_64 processors is really fucking bad news for Nintendo because it means they are absolutely going to get *spanked* on backwards compatibility when Scorpio and the PS5 come out because there should be no significant performance decrease on existing PS4 games and perfect BC (or as close as you can get to perfect). The NX is going to come out in 2017 with a Scorpio release potentially as early as 2018, it'll be too little too late even if it edges out the current consoles on graphics by a slight margin (which is doubtful since Nintendo doesn't want to take the margin hits to sell the console at a loss and make it up on games).

BC doesn't prevent remasters, although it might dent sales. In any event if PS5 was not BC, MS could easily embarass them by making Scorpio backward compatible, and it would give much less of a reason for PS4 owners to remain loyal to the Playstation brand when the PS5 came around.
For the PS3 -> PS4 move, yeah they remastered it up a lot, but there really was no way to get backward compatibility from the Cell to x86_64. The SPUs on the Cell are fucking ridiculous and very different from x86_64's architecture...
Most people said 360 on the Xbone was impossible and I would be one of them. The fact that Microsoft was able to emulate the PPC instruction set in a VM and have it be playable at all is nothing short of software engineering mastery, and it's a hell of an achievement.

The NX is a streaming app that works on a lot of devices including the PS4, Xbone, iOS, Android. You just download the app, buy a game then the game gets streamed to your device. Nintendo has decided to do this because most people aren't willing to buy new Nintendo consoles so this is the easiest way for them to survive.
