One of my all-time favorites and contender to best game.

I believe Silent Hill 2 is the best argument for games as art. Comparable to a Tarkovsky film.
>>343051740
I don't believe it. no one is smart enough to get through the Dig without becoming entirely disillusioned while looking at gamefaqs
pic related a best, not the character though

>>343052597
All games are art. Like all painting, or all books.
Not all art is equally good though.

why can't a game with a primary focus on gameplay be the best argument for games as art?

I didn't have the internet when the game came out, I had to solve that shit the old fashioned way, trial and error.

D0G is one of the characters you rescue in the DLC. I guess Elohiem sent him to "hell" for not cooperating. Hell was a pretty dope place though.
Arx Fatalis
Something about the whole setting, the interaction between the factions and just the general tone set up for you makes the game an unforgettable experience.
So fucking cozy
The game I feel the most nostalgia for is Red Faction Guerrilla but it isn't necessarily my favorite game.
For favorite game I would have to say anything in the Fire Emblem series, but more specifically Awakening, though I haven't played either of the Fates games enough to really decide whether it's better or not
>>343053056
He gets a body like the main character or more like how the library program escaped? What exactly does rescuing entail here?
Black & White
2 was pretty but nowhere near as interesting or complex.
tenchu, ffxi, RotT, omikron, sysho2

I'm gonna have to second this
Truly one of the best games I've ever played in my life
>>343053119
Who knows, it's kind of implied the all the people in Gehenna get the same thing that the player character got in the main game, but it's left ambiguous.
Best game in the series and better than HoMM 3 in my opinion.

it's not like puzzles were bad or anything, it's just that they activate in nonsensical ways. like, you have to do something unrelated in another location for something to happen in a location you previously visited. probably some of the best written games I've ever played, though.

Yeah, maybe in combat department but it was a lesser game in every other way. Both sequels suffered in a sense they became way too serious compared to childish sense of adventure first game had and fell into all the DRAMA traps along the way.

I'm not even into RTS games that much, but I love WWII settings. Some people shit on it for never being balanced, and they're probably right, but that doesn't matter to me since I only ever comp stomp.
Only thing I dearly miss from the first game was the dialogue changes when a squad was close to being wiped out. That, and Brandon Keener as the USF sniper.

Everyone'd bitch about low res assets because face it, very few companies take the time to upscale PS1 title properly. Plus its still so underrated because everyone compares to 2, its fucking undub is not even done right and battle voices are still english.
>>343054195
Agreed though 2 was still good, one of the few of its kind that handled edgyness amazingly I feel. Localization definitely helped with that. 3 was beyond saving expect battle/visuals. 1st game had its fair share of drama too after the 1st half of the game.

It's not like AoW and Heroes were ever directly competing, though. Each had its different focuses. Skyrim and TF2 would be my favourites due to sheer playtime. Best is Skyrim by far though, 800 hours with workshop mods and no use of Nexus and I still play it. If I get bored I'll start using Nexus.

Morrowind is a high fantasy adventure featuring heavy religious intrigue high player freedom and no good guy bad guy dichotomy.
Gothic 2 is a menial work simulator where your every attempt to progress is blocked by an npc who wants you to pick his vegetables or stand guard at a dock. Once you finally get past crap you get to fight generic evil orcs.

It might offend /v/'s sensibilities but it's a game I can always come back to for a comfy playthrough.Runner ups would be mother 3, PMD sky, saint's row 2, and mount and liberal crime squad

Totally agree. Resident Evil 4 is in my top 5, and legitimately one of the best games ever made.

Folklore on PS3. More recent example I've really come to like despite it's problems with re-using locations. It kinda got shat on because it did DLC while it was still at its infancy and didn't turn out to be a 10/10 GOTY masterpiece people were looking for. Also, it's just one of many early PS3 titles that got forgotten later on.
>>343055491
This. There's too many things different between each game to have an overall favorite.
>>343055548

I change games pretty often and don't have a "main" game.

>complex dialogue trees leading to multiple outcomes
>can be a total dick to everyone
>in depth origin for each race leading to tons of roleplay potential

It's praised because CRPGs were deader than dead back then so it was seen as beacon of hope for the genre. It was also a lot of people's babby's first CRPG.
Paper Mario is the literal only game i've played through 3 times and I enjoyed every moment of each of those. Its a real shame what the current state of the series is.

The slowness is ok once you understand it's necessary for proper micromanagement, without the game becoming an apm hell like Starcraft. Well, there is a psp spin-off, but it's not as good.
But yes, the sequel was canned.

Few games allow you to be necromancer, even fewer allow you to have army of skellies, but anything more complicated can only be found in paper RPG's

Hearthstone is still the most popular computer card game,I think it's still going well
I might get hate for this one
>>343057415

Not only because of EA, but also because the main audience for videogames has become dumber and more widespread. Also take in mind that it has to work on consoles as well, with all its limitations in both power and controls.
>>343057540
I'll let it pass because you posted my favourite zone. So many great memories there from reliving Vietnam every time Horde were around to chilling on the secluded waterfall with my gurlfrend.
>>343057540
Only here
It is perfectly understandable you have played and loved this game, but since most of people left it they hate it now
Hard to choose, but this game was my jam back in the day.
>>343057483
Plenty of games let you have an army of skeletons they just aren't rpgs because you need a game built around controlling an army to make controlling an army work.

HoMM3 necromancy is pretty much the perfect system, but I would like to see stuff like this in RPG/action game
Also some creative ways of using magic. It is always fireball, bigger fireball, heal, bigger heal, invisibilty etc.

For those that dont know. The sequel was in production. However, the huge natural disaster hit japan around this time. Irem, who also makes the Disaster Report series which is about numerous characters surviving through natural disasters, could not release this game right after a real one hit their home, so the game was scrapped late into its production. Irem is now well into the red and without their next game to pull them out of it, they unfortunately had to scrap production on their other games as well, Steambot Chronicles 2 included. Now I hear the remnants of Irem are making weird shitty 3d browser games or something. Whatever it is, its a sad way to go
I never see people talking about this game. This game is amazing.

Card based combat sucks dick
It's hard to pick an absolute favorite of all time, but currently the most enjoyable game for me is Alien: Isolation. I liked it so much that I beat it once on Hard and once on Nightmare. Now I'm doing another Nightmare run. I don't know what it is, but I absolutely love the overall aesthetic and feel of the game, just wandering around an abandoned space station and stuff.
I had a similar feeling of wanting to go back again and again when playing HL1 for the first time around its' release. 70s- early 90s sci-fi settings were pretty great.
Any game from the Arkhamverse, everyone has it pros and cons, but all of them are my favorite games.
>>343051740
Unironically my favourite Mario game. I love all of the movement options in this game and the camera is a significant improvement from 64.
>>343053276

I love it so much

I'm relatively new to the JRPG genre but hot damn, I can't get enough of this game. It's a shame that Xenoblade X didn't emphasize story as much as the original.
>>343059238
vanilla or warband?
I don't even like JRPGs for the most part, but DQ did it for me. Thinking of replaying it soon.
>>343059179

>>343059179

>>343059543
Between flood and the dive move, I can live without it no problem.
Literally the comfiest game ever.
Really hard to choose.
I've spent incredible amounts of time playing Brood War and Diablo 2, and both are among my all-time favourites.
This being said, there is only one game that I've finished and immediately went back for a second playthrough: Devil May Cry 3:SE. If there is a single game I gotta pick, that would be the one.
Thief. The most immersive game for me, I would totally live (and die) in the city.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. too. Probably Call of Pripyat.
Chivalry is the ultimate multiplayer for me. At least until patches ruined it.
I can't just choose one!
But if I had to, it's a toss between Crusader Kings 2, Warband and Fallout: New Vegas
>>343056836
How do the M&M games hold up today? I've had some anthology disc with a bunch of them for years, but never really got into playing.
>>343056516
For me its more about the impact the game had on me. I can replay my favourite game over and over and wont be bored. I like it even if i know its flaws and it has a special place in my heart.I have a XBHUEG just for it.
>>343051740

thats the problem. i feel like discworld games don't NEED rincewind, they can have anyone as your playable character because its more about the world your in AND the characters that are in it.
i got the first one on PS1 in the cool longbox, RIP terry.
>>343053561
>>343059213
Why does everyone hate the controls? I thought they were perfect for the type of game and having it any other way would ruin it. Playing it with point and click in the remastered killed it for me

2 is my favourite, but most won't agree. 100% worth the play with some great environments and puzzles.
3 and 4 went full 3D and were really bad imo.
5 seems pretty promising so far, only an hour in
>>343063741
are the voice actors the same? i was growing fond of their voices. and isn't there a remake of BS1 on the wii? i have BS1 on the GBA which is just weird as hell
Goddamn masterpiece.
I hope that The Silver Case english release will be good. Never played it.
>>343063970
George has kept the same voice in all of them, Nico has change every game I think (although I couldn't tell).
George sounded super fucking weird in the newest one, had to google if it was the same actor. guess he's just getting old.
>>343057887
I prefered the second one for its space combat and the first one because the guns seemed to do more damage.
>>343063984
This looks interesting
>>343063147
Why even? I only played 1, but the only good thing that it had going on was the visuals and the music. Controlling the characters was a pain in the ass because it felt like tank controls, having no way to control the direction while you're jumping also was awful.
Levels also felt repetitive and small, and even managed to dip in quality after you recruit combo and Cube, for example Grind Square and the level before that.
No way to actually save more than 1 type of graffiti at a time, you have to remake them every time.
There's also nothing to do after the game that makes you want to replay it, except get a higher score. Also the starting mission where you have to recruit gum, tab, and later on other people for the GGs are ridiculous and just interrupt the flow of the gameplay
>>343052340

It's got to be Harry Potter 1 for the PS1 for me (and the 2nd one too, since they're basically the same game gameplay-wise). It's not a technically great game, nor was it revoolutionary for its time, but the mix of fun and nostalgia I feel for it is overwhelming... I still play this now and then on my old PS1.
What a ride.
I really wish Kojima would just play his first 3 Solid games, so he could understand what made them good.
