I just bought it and finished it. It's a good game. The graphics are kind of ugly and the writing can be cringey (not full on memes but I finally get what /v/ means), but the music is good and I like how the battles play out. Even the story is decent enough, though the final boss (of the normal playthrough) makes me feel like the creators were trying way too hard.

When the demo came out some 2 or so odd years ago, it was met on the internet with mostly positive results, 4chan being no different. Yes, there was an influx of furry posting with Toriel being the only identifiable female character, but also with Frisk never having their name spoken out loud and no one even calling them "they" and instead just "human" led to a lot of unisex art of them as well. As time goes on, this trend continued, but I feel like I'm getting off topic. The point was that people liked the game enough to make porn out of a demo, and quite a bit of it at that.
The gameplay was a unique mix of RPG and Bullet Hell mechanics, though it didnt succeed in being too difficult at either. It became apparent to those playing the demo that this game wasn't intended to be hard. That lost a few points, but still hype remained.
However, the few people in the demo who actually discovered the genocide ending were the ones who truly started drumming up hype, with things like the personal booklet that came with the demo becoming corrupted, Flowey saying strange things that, in the Demo's context made no sense, hype stayed strong.
It would be over 13 months before Undertale actually came out.

When it came out, I'll admit I didn't know that it did until about a week later. It appeared that the game caught a lot of people off guard and they were a bit hesitant to talk about it until they knew that what they had was a hit, and then the great Undertale Internet flooding began. For a while, it did seem like the single most popular game to ever exist. As time went on, it proved to be the flavor of not just one month, but several months. The game's fandom is apparently here to stay, even if new content never comes out. It reminds me of Katawa Shuojou in that regard.

The gameplay stayed more or less the same. Unique with dashes of freshness with every boss, and sometimes every enemy. It never was really HARD per se, unless you went with the Genocide playthrough, which wasn't fully fleshed out by the fandom until about the first two or so weeks of playtime due to the Spoiler Squelch.
With the Exception of Sparing Undyne, beating Undying Undyne, and Sans, the game's difficulty was rather low, and a lot of players didnt seem to mind, though people looking for more of a challenge are STILL, to this day, looking for a hard mode to come out.
It probably never will.

It's hard to talk about the game without talking about its story, but I'm not talking about the fallen human so much as I'm talking about the player's interaction with the world. Almost every single player who wasn't intensely spoiled will have killed Toriel their first time through, and this was a very good learning experience as it did 2 very crucial things.
1) it would make the more pacifist oriented players feel guilty and reset to be mocked by flowey and 2) would prove to the player that the monsters you may or may not have killed may not be finite either; leading to what would be known as the Genocide Playthrough.
As the game goes on, the strategy for killing remains the same, but sparing becomes more and more unique, until Asgore, where you cannot spare unless you do what was originally a Newbie's trap for Toriel: Damage him until you can spare him. I will admit to falling into the "die a lot" trap about 4 times before saying fuck it and seeing what would happen if I "killed him"
Only for Flowey to come and be Flowey all over again.
The way the game fucks with the player was impressive, it was like Psycho mantis, but ALL the time.
Is this the best game ever? No. It has very piss poor replayability past one or two missed endings, the gameplay can get very repetitive after a while, and the graphics are... inconsistent.
