I like that it does away with all the shitty dialogue and pointless "combat" that games like Earthbound use for padding. I like its outstanding atmosphere and good artwork and I think that its exploration model gets old after a while. It also could use some better signposting because I never figured out whether I've gathered all I've could, if I should put items in the "common" room as eggs and whether something will happen or not. As with many of my favourite games I have never finished it.

I'd prefer he gave us something. I don't want him to give all the meanings away but I wish he would point us in the correct direction or tell us in what light we should interpret the game. Is Madotsuki scared of what she is seeing or completely fine with it? Do we take the idea that these dreams are torturing her at face value or is the game more like a jungle gym for the imagination and not everything in the game is meant to be taken totally literally? Those sort of answers.
What other RPGmaker games do people suggest playing? Spooky mostly welcome but others are highly appreciated.

I love Yume Nikki for the exact reasons you mention but Earthbounds practically a parody of JRPGs
and the combat still manages to be engaging enough. not really all that bad.
If anything the game could use less or easier to avoid enemy encounters thats about it.
There are a lot of poignant moments delivered through the battle system
Like Poo's training and of course Giygas battle.
I always like how the game can go from whimsical to dreadful in pretty subtle ways.
Like it wasn't a horror game by any means, but you couldn't help but feel uncomfortable at at times.
This was one of those /v/core games together with Cave Story back then.
Feels like so long ago.

Witch's House has a pretty neat reveal at the end. It is a shame a lot of the horror before that end sequence was pretty predictable after a few times.

Kikiyama has done just Yume Nikki, and nothing else. There's some great fangames, though. .flow and 2kki are universally regarded as the best ones. Yume Nishi and LCDem's devs hate their games for some reason. LISA the first is like Yume Nikki, but it's themes aren't as vague or abstract.
Give original ones like Space Funeral, Wadonohara, LISA The Painful and OFF a try, if you want an RPG.

played it about 2 months ago now and really enjoyed it. The ambiguity of everything was super intriguing and I loved the art style. Tried the second fan made game and didn't really dig it. Well shit guys, I'm almost out of Yume Nikki material.
I'm gonna post the rest of what I've got and then I'm going to post some of the fangame related art I have.
I've always been a little jealous of the surrealist places she visits, my dreams are never crazy environments and rarely have any non-human creatures.
After I explored a good portion of the doors it became sort of a chore to bike around, find an entrance, and touch a ghost. More of the areas needed to be like the stair climb into the forest, then into the bathroom, into a weird place, and back out. That was such a great experience.
I think the effects weren't a worthy addition honestly. I know they are practically all the gameplay elements, but I feel like something else could have been worked around to better fit the dream environment and the exploration aspects.
