The facility I work at is basically a daycare for developmentally disabled children and teens, includingg. those with Mid to low functioning Autism, Down Syndrom, and FAS. Meltdowns are frequent, as are "scatological incidents," and as the intern I get to help corral the kids and clean up the mess. Some of the severe autists are basically catatonic and need to be supervised 24/7. There are higher functioning ones who can communicate freely and act ay the level of an 11 year old, but even they have hygiene issues usually and are prone to tantrums if they become over stimulated. Hilariously, there's a hugbox in one of the back rooms, but we've never used it.
I love working with most of the kids though. We have a big computer room that we host a Minecraft server in and that usually keeps them behaved for most of the day.

Actually this is one of the biggest misconceptions about autism that pisses me off the most. Its not one fucking disease. Much like "Fibromyalgia" or "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome", "Autism" is used as a catch-all for certain symptom groups. Thus, by identifying it as simply one syndrome or identity, it actually harms the patients.
Don't get me wrong, autism is absolutely real just like the above. But the same way you wouldn't diagnose a patient with "chest pain" and then just leave it the fuck at that, you have to realize that it can be caused by a ton of different things. For instance, a big one (and a cause of many diseases) is infection. Toxoplasmosis for instance and the big one - tick borne illnesses like Lyme Disease. Kids with these illnesses tend to present as "autistic" in terms of symptoms. Adults sometimes do, but they also get told they have fibro/CFS at best or at worst, are just "lazy" or depressed. Treat them properly and they improve.
Autism symptom presentations can also come from everything from methylation issues to inflammatory processes from certain kinds of food (which may in turn be caused by something else). Its really pretty complex and much of the medical profession isn't up to handling something that they can't slap and easy label and a pill on it, which is disappointing. Thankfully, there are some who are trying to break down these barriers because the status quo is basically telling some people who might be treatable that "nope, you just kinda have to deal with it".
