Well technically they're just Forest Sprites that take the form of whatever. I assume in this case they work similar to the Kikwi or other trees and flowers. They produce a seedling and that seedling becomes a new Kokiri/Korok/etc.
If I recall the Great Deku Tree mentioned something about creating them as well, so maybe the Great Deku Tree bases certain new children of the forest off other ones and that is to be considered a descendant. Hell maybe they can just mate and interbreed, every other race seems to be able to, even Goron and Zora. I mean it's not far off to think the Hero of Time and her would have gotten together had she not been a Sage and him not being hurled through time on the whims of a Princess.

The timeline has always been pretty fluid. Aonuma's said that there's always been a timeline, but it's not as if they're trying hard to stick to it. They're frequently willing to change things around to suit their needs at any time. Even the timeline in Hyrule Historia isn't completely set in stone and they can throw it all out the window at any time if they feel like it.

Fi was a rare exception to the recent companions and while I personally liked her despite the robotic tone and constantly telling me about my batteries, it's a real shame that people hated her so much they've removed companions completely.

I love that Zelda is getting a story honestly. While I think some games focus too much on it and ultimately make them movies, I think Zelda has always had a nice balance as time has moved on. I love that the characters of these worlds are actually getting some personality and things going on with them. I remember first playing WW and seeing Link run off a cliff to save Aryll. I remember Midna getting blasted by Zant and choosing to save Link instead. I remember SS Link raging and running after Girahim at the Temple of Time. The problem is, video games can't really give much feedback being pre-programmed mediums. No one wants to reward the player's efforts with just some text on the screen that says "You beat the game!" I know this was the norm thirty years ago, but nowadays, game devs wanna give a little more bang for the player's buck.
That's always what story and cutscenes in video games was meant to be: a reward for the player.
I do agree that too much linearity can be boring, though, so I hope they found a nice balance with Breath of the Wild. Aonuma said that the story is something you need to actively hunt down in the game, and if that's the case, then it really is a reward for the player's efforts. The Gorons were mostly easy to help out, just blow up the rock, which they could have just as easily done, lazy fucks.

Thank you for articulating something ive always hated about SS but never pinpointed until now. Almost all dialogue in SS is shit you already know, and im not talking about knowledge about prior Zeldas but of the SS story so far. Well eventually they'll have to. There are only 3 things around it that can happen anymore, and that's direct sequels or a direct prequel.
I mean we have OoT/MM/TP/WW that all reference the Hero of Time and that immediate Hyrule, likely BotW too. That's a total of 5 games, including the game itself.
The other Link we have is ALttP Link, which is comprised of him having 4 games just to himself. ALttP/OoA/OoS/LA, and then an immediate game after that that references it with ALBW, and that game having it's own direct sequel too.

I can see why they do it, it's intelligent from a marketing standpoint.
References to older games in a new title have the potential to get new players and fans interested in checking out (aka buying) the older games.
Hence why it was so damn smart of them to remake TP, WW, OoT, ALBW and MM, especially after all of the positive reception that BoTW is receiving from both fans and those completely unaffiliated with the Zelda franchise.
