I only played for 4 and it sucked pretty hard.
The combat is pretty awful and I heard the gameplay in 5 didn't improve at all
Gonna pick it up when I get a Neo later this year. The biggest complaint i've seen is that it's too short. With FF15 and Persona 5 both being 60+ hours, and my vita backlog, A fun 20 hours doesn't sound too bad.

A SO game's postgame is directly tied to how long you have to grind item creation to get through it. In 1 and 2 you don't have to, so you can clear the postgame in 3-5 hours easily. In 3 and 4 you have to grind a fucking lot of item creation, especially in 3 where you might have to go back and remake completely new shit after finishing the first bonus dungeon.
5 needs item creation, but the item creation itself is more in line with 1 or 2 and easier to do and get materials needed and what not.
Also despite meme shitposting, even 2 is a "20 hour game" if you want it to be. I've 100%ed the game in sub 30 hours before. I've also spent 150 hours on one file fucking around. Mileage varies depending on how you play the games

I'm on break and I only have about 2 days to play it, so I welcome the short length. After trying to grind through a realm reborn to get to the expansion content, I welcome a short game. I just beat ZTD and it was only about 14 hours which was pretty perfect.
I'm still getting it. I feel somewhat obligated to for some reason. I've played 1-3 but I only ever finished 2. Lost interest pretty fast in 1 and 3. If anyone is looking to play the first though I would recommend the original and not the shitty ass psp remake.
