Diversity is fine, but not when it comes to as demographically specific of a medium as video games. Even today it is obviously mostly white males that play, especially the games you listed, and the portray otherwise would he simply lying.
Also this list is horribly biased and was intentionally made to overly simplify video game protagonists. Half the ones listed aren't even generic "white" males. A lot of them in their actual game have noticable features of numerous ethnicities (Irish, Romanian, Italian, etc.)
Also the protagonist for Saint's Row can be whatever you want him/her to be, so that's another thing is image is biased about and is intentionally cherry picking.
So in conclusion, as long as games are picking protagonists based on who is going to play the game, as well as who realistically is most likely to do the things in that game, then it's perfectly fine. If that just happens to be a white male that is also fine.

You know, I don't get the big whine about this. "Hurr durr brown haired man" thing. Now, aside from offering either A) full character customization a la Mass Effect and Saint's Row series, B) Multiple protags or C) demand that your game should star a woman just fucking because... "dark brown haired guy with medium skin tone" is pretty much the most inclusive you can be.
That's why it was chosen. Could you be "white" northern european? "white" southern european? Middle eastern/Mediterranean? Hispanic? Indigenous/American Indian? Hell, lots of Japanese portray themselves / see characters in anime and whatnot as Japanese/Asian even when they look white Etc... Assuming your protagonist is a man, that "dark brown hair, medium skin tone" is the closest to so many ethnicities or mixes thereof that more players could find it inclusive.
Its literally the middle of the spectrum that gives the most people the most ability to identify with the character. You pick something like black guy, blonde, or ginger, you're limiting the appeal moreso. You want full customization including gender and race,that's fine. But if its not possible, brown haired guy is literally the best you can do.
Ideally I'd like to see more games where you don't play as a human at all. But I would never expect a developer to change their character for my benefit, and fully understand that human characters sell.
These things are easy to understand, so why is it such a struggle for some?
If I were a game modern game developer, I would absolutely NOT make a female or colored lead. At least with a white male lead you can show a degree of weakness or character flaw. At the very least the journos will go "Grrr, men!" and move on to whatever else pays for their blue hair dye.
But a black lead? Or god forbid a female lead? They're going to put that shit under the microscope. They will take every character fault as a personal attack on their gender or race. They will demand blood should anything be less than perfect. Unless the nonstandard lead is perfect, invulnerable and "Anything you can do I can do better" is playing at all times, you will be burned at the cross for your crimes against humanity.
