GPU wise they don't really provide any competition beyond mass produced cheap solutions for consoles. They're a cheap solution to which many people are willing to accept for the trade off of heat, power, and less performance which isn't a big deal to normies. But the problem exists when suddenly someone wants their next card which ends being nvidia typically due to drivers, at least among everyone I've known.
AMD is trying to stay relevant by creating open source libraries for developers to use, which is hardly being used. Only reason why Vulkan used Mantle as a starting base is, because writing such low level graphics code is insanely tedious and something that has been 'perfected' for decades. So why bother to rewrite what was already rewritten?
On the flipside of 'nvidia is the devil with gameworks!' I find hilarious since they've provided a ton of these features 10 years ago for people who use nvidia cards not for video games, but actual simulations. It's not new, it's that they can used in real time at 60fps.
CPU wise it's the same thing. Cheap solutions due to more cores and if your workload can utilize all cores then they are the better choice in most cases. Otherwise Intel is the way to go with better per core, less power, and less heat.
The real question is how long will AMD exist? I don't believe they see anywhere near the profits of nvidia or intel.

Same performance without gimped vram and has amazing dx12 support along with VR ready the longevity of the card is amazing to given improvements to resource management on future games here the 390 will just get better with time.
If you're not willing to get a 390 you're only option is to throw money at the 480 which is $100 more or spend $500+ for a 980ti and up.
In all opinion though the 970 is the worst choice of the lot given it will no longer be supported at all. While the 390 will still see support for the next two generations given there's zero point to upgrade for a 2-5 fps difference.
The only other option if you don't wanna consider that the 390 is equal to a 970 but with better support is that you opt the money for a 980ti or even better a 1080 from EVGA or XFX.

Pretty much every game in 2017 will/should be DX12 or Vulcan. Same thing happened with DX11, in 2009 no one used it and in 2010/2011 everyone used it.
New APIs need some time before they are used because most games were probably already nearly finished with DX11 so they wont go back and redo the game for DX12.

Can't forget the drivers. I jumped on a used 970 a guy was unloading to buy a 1080 about two months back to replace my 270X, and the difference in support is night and day. I mean, I love Big Red, I really do. Switched over when I went from an Nvidia 8500GT to a 5770, and it was great. Then the 7770, then a 270X. All decent cards, but it took forever to get functional drivers for a lot of games, and even then the results were underwhelming a lot of the time. Meanwhile I get weekly driver updates with Nvidia to ensure functionality on new game releases. I really want AMD to turn things around, but as it stands they're always going to be the bargain alternative to Nvidia as opposed to an actual competitor.

Synthetic benchmarks don't mean shit. I have a 1070 and a FX 8350 (fuck off) and I get only 10k in firestrike because 1920x1080 is too low of a resolution. Meanwhile on the 4k benchmark I get a couple hundred points less than a 5820k because it's more GPU bound and especially in games. I play at 3440x1440 by the way.
