Around when the old show was rebirthed, people would post pony threads ironically on /b/ and have these silly pretend threads about which Pony they would fuck and which was the best, etc. Similar in fashion to fingerbox threads.
Except 4chan is filled with manchildren, so the threads went from ironic to literal Brony in a very short period of time.
I'm almost certain this is how it happened. One day the threads weren't there, the next day they were taking up 90% of /b/, at around the same level that boxxy was being spammed in her prime. It was very forced. And like most things that start on 4chan, it leaked everywhere else with even less chance of it being seen as a joke.
