Tactics was an improvement in engine and gameplay, and the story is actually somewhat neat. Too bad the enviroment interaction suffered as a result.

I haven't played the others. I was thinking of waiting for the GOTY of 4 but after seeing how shitty the DLC was probably wont bother. The was what made 3 good and 4 doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Yeah, they improved the animations, but fucked up everything else. It's clearly a rushed game. IIRC, it was launched with barely any QA.
Any recommendations on how to not be shit at Fallout 1 or 2?
I've played NV for many, many hours but going back to 1 or 2 is hard. I feel like I'm just too conditioned to being a shitter and having the game tell me where to go and what to do. Just wandering and exploring would be fun and I'd have no problems, except in Fallout 1 there's a time limit and it goes pretty quickly, so I have a hard time exploring or going everywhere knowing I'm being timed strictly.
I also get murdered very easily in the combat, I don't know if I'm bad or just in areas I shouldn't be in. I don't really have specifics, these are just random observations from my three or four attempts at playthroughs.
How do I get into it?

Don't take any of the premades at the beginning. Create your own character. AGI 8, 9 or 10 for any kind of fighting.

The time limit is pretty forgiving, and you can remove it entirely after playing your cards right.

1) Use companions. At first, it will seem impossible to kill Super Mutants because they have huge fucking guns, but they're actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
2) Dont give Burst weapons to companions.

Is there a possible pacifist playthrough or is a combat build the only viable type? I love the dialogue in this game, especially that you have to pick the correct and best speech option all by yourself instead of having a massive 100 PERCENT next to it making it a game of chance.
