Yeah the forest is cool because it's a lot faster and you start out with the axe to start crafting and building and fighting immediately.
I pirated The Forest when it first was available but didn't care much for it, but I just grabbed it off the steam sale and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. They really give you a lot of freedom on how you want to play but also keep it challenging as the enemies are fairly strong.
It's not really a survival game per se but Slime Rancher is worth checking out.

It's really good, I enjoyed the shit out of it but it's very niche. It does one thing only, high-speed platforming and honestly it's a little tricky getting into it at first, the controls are a bit finicky and takes some getting used to but once you have it down then it feels fucking fantastic going really really really fast all the time.
My biggest gripe is the enemy system, there's a bunch of static enemies that get in the way of going really really fast and it's often more frustrating to maneuver around them or shoot them than it is satisfying. I still recommend it because I love the gameplay but I can see how some people would hate it. Watch the trailer a few more times or a gameplay video before pulling the trigger.

Fortune Summoners is pretty fun but with very tight controls and very punishing. Basically every single monster out there can fuck your shit if you aren't familiar with parrying, dodging and other sorts of not taking damage. Learn your spacing and comfortable bubble for fighting.
In a while you will feel like a fucking gladiator, every map is a battlefield.
