This was part of the strategy to make video games part of the "gender associated toys" bullshit.
I think people still underestimate how much brainfuckery toys induce. To me it's a miracle how people can turn out well after playing with dolls for years. Just think about it for a moment.
ITT: People don't realize that back in the 80s and 90s, video game consoles were considered toys. In order to sell a toy in both of those eras in retail stores, you had to classify your toy as for boys or for girls. You didn't have unisex toys. All toy stores divided their products based on gender. The only exception to this was board games. Game consoles and video games definitely did not fit into that category.
Don't blame Nintendo for the add. They had no choice. Blame toy store retailers. Kaybee Toys was mainly responsible for this kind of marketing.
