Does the game have any sort of story or an end goal?
So, how does one make a good squad?
I think the answer is healing and, more importantly, >Stress management.
And we don't have many options for that.
Crits benefit the attacker/reciever & maybe one companion
Kills seem to give stress relief occasionally
Jester is excellent for stress, but relies on bleed
Crusader is next-best, not a bad choice at all
Hound Master is pretty weak
And then some heros can heal their own stress- Leper & abom in particular

So I'm thinking you need one of the following:
An extremely high-crit squad, (4xGraveRobbers), a decent stress-healer (Jester/Crus), or a low-stress/self-healing squad.
Like, say,

Teamwide stress heal is much better than single target..The entire party takes minor stress throughout the dungeon, which the houndmaster deals with nicely in a single turn. Any major stress you take can be camped or crit away, hes even a better fighter than the jester.
The real value of the jester is his completely obscene buff.

When it really comes down to it, Crusader is actually a very mediocre class. There are much better choices for the first two slots. Hound Master is great, and absolutely bonkers in the Warrens.

I used the cudgel trinket for HM with the stun amulet
at the time he was level 4 with a level 4 blackjack which has a base 155% stun chance add in the cudgel for another 40% and the stun amulet for 30% which brings it to 225% the cauldron has a 220% stun resist, so basically I got off a 5% stun
