Saints Row 2 is better than GTA but is a terrible port and nigh unplayable on PC.
Saints Row 3 dumbed a lot of the mechanics down and opted for a much more silly, lighthearted story but is still a great game for what it is. It tried something different and succeeded.
Saints Row 4 is a great super hero action game. The series strays even further from 2 and the GTA formula. Gat out of Hell is just a standalone expansion pack.
I'd say its worth it but you have to know what you're getting into. The only games that are comparable to GTA are 1 and 2.

Valdis Story is way, way, way better than Dust if you're looking for 2D action platformers. Its the best game you have on the list and one of the best metroidvanias on Steam.

The combat uses a grid system for positioning characters, enemies, and attacks, so it's not strictly menu based.
If you've ever played Skies of Arcadia, it's like that combat system but done better.
And if you haven't played Skies of Arcadia, play that.

Straight up I'm not a fan of turned based combat at all and I loved the gameplay. Trails has a unique type of Strategy RPG type combat though. So its a lot more interactive and its really addicting imo.

I uninstalled Darksiders as soon as Lucifer roared in my face. Why would Lucifer, who was depicted as being intelligent and conniving, decide to suddenly roar like a mindless beast in my face? Its clunky, linear, offers zero replay value and only takes about 4 or so hours to beat on a first playthrough. Its not even hard because you get 2 seconds of invincibility frames when you roll. Momo 1-3 was the dev trying to rip off Cave Story, Momo 4 was him trying to rip off Dark Souls.
There are so many other games out there that you can get instead of Momodora. Valdis story less on Steam and has 10x more content and replayablity and doesn't play like molasses.

Note about environmental station alpha,
It's post game content (going to 200% rather than 100%) starts out good but becomes a massive, unpleasant autism fest of cryptic shit (like using the keyboard to type in secret codes at specific blocks based on poorly written hints than La Mulana) and when you get to 160% completion you have to beat the entire game again with all your power ups to get 200%.
In that sense it's retarded, but it's an ok metroid clone, probably better than Axiom Verge.
Also the story and boss designs are very very boring, not that story is the most important thing, but they advertise the game as if you're solving a big mystery as to what happened to the station when it really isn't.
I'll give you a hint, right at the beginning of the game they say that the machines have gone crazy, guess what could make robots go crazy? You've got it, That's the plot of the game outside of the metroidian chozo inspired stuff that will never be made clear.

It has the same problems as the other AC games in that tailing missions are not fucking fun and the collectible shit is just strewn about without any care other than to fill up the map, but the pirate aspect makes it very engaging for the most part. Hearing your crew sing shanties while you go about having naval battles and hunting whales was what I did for like thirty hours while barely touching the story.

The game has very simple yet practical power ups.
most of the game at first revolves around skillful use of the grapple beam power up, which can be used on all surfaces (except specific glowing blocks) and can be used to skillfully sling yourself around the map to gain power ups.
I had a lot of fun with this.
Later game has you using using boosters that remind me a bit of cave story.
Some power ups are poorly thought out, such as one that merely disintegrates yellow blocks when you move next to them, though some parts of the game make you turn that power up off because you don't want these blocks to disappear.
Unfortunately there are only like 4 offensive power ups in the game, but since the bosses all have a sort of "moment of weakness" style the game focuses less on boosting weapons.
Though one power up really makes your beam wreck shit.

I have 70 hours on it, though some fights were tough and I died a lot and I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out the post game secrets (I got side tracked by a grid map room that I thought revealed something important to the game but was actually a map of unfunny easter egg rooms)
The map that gets posted sort of tricks you into thinking it's massive, but it's pretty standard metroid size map.
Post game content provides you with at least three extra bosses, though one of them I didn't fight because he instant kills you unless you use a power up at the right time and I figured it was a scripted event and never to try it.
desu, I didn't 200% it, I got to the point where the third endings known as the "glitch ending" that resets your game minus losing your health and power ups.
Why this allows you to sequence break, I never explored it because it didn't look like a new game + or anything, but a guide said it gives you the true ending if you beat the game on your newgame + file.
I don't know if there is perhaps another hidden fight other than the Three post game fights, but as far as I can tell new game + is structured the same way.

Haven't gotten around to trying Planetary Annihilation yet so I can't help you there. Although if the supcom-style RTS is what you're after I'm fairly sure supcom gold is still the best of the bunch.
If you're willing to splash more on it, I heard the new Homeworld game (Deserts of Kharak) is good. Also haven't tried it myself, but my Homeworld fanatic pal was really impressed by it. And if you've never played them, Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations are both really cheap at the moment and are some of the best examples of the Age of Empires-style RTS.

I really enjoyed the Harebrained Shadowrun games. Or at least the last two.
Dragonfall is probably my top for story. Hong Kong for overall gameplay/mechanics (to be expected with it being the latest version of the engine).
Returns was solid, but that first iteration engine is so rough I had a hard time getting into it. I only finished it after completing both Dragonfall and Hong Kong, and probably only stuck through it because I chose the most vanilla character build possible (rifle street samurai) just to push through.
One of the common complaints with HK though is the available nuyen in the game. Can't get too crazy with builds just because you likely won't be able to afford it. My decker/shotgunner that branched into cyberware had to settle for some lesser chrome.

Spec-Ops has a great setting and divisive narrative/theme, but plays like a generic TPS except you have limited command over your two buds. Never played the multiplayer, but I really enjoyed the story and attention to detail when it comes to the decent into madness. Worth it.
Bully is really fun with a great ambiance but the minigames may leave a bad taste in your mouth, top three Rockstar experiences in my opinion.

Yes, If you aren't an asshurt fangirl, it's probably THE best operator game we're gonna get for a long time. Story is still MGS tier bullshit, but much more toned down and straight forward.
But the freedom you have to basically go into a mission is great. You can come at it from so many sides, kill everyone, tranq everyone, have your chopper murder everyone, have your dog kill people. It's a pretty amazing game imo

Truth be told it has some of the best stealth gameplay of all time. But the pacing is really bizarre, the second chapter sucks and is just retreads of old missions and the third chapter does not exist. If you care about MGS' story, you'll be disappointed heavily. It's pretty great, I 100%ed it prior to the ledge detection/controller fixes. Definitely favor it over AC for gameplay, but one thing that bothered me was the fact that around half way through the game all you get is reversed maps. 1 v 1 combat sucks ass, but I never had to do it since I sticked to stealth and would get one shot thanks to the max difficulty.

Do you want one of the best games from Platinum or one of the best Action RPGs of the decade? Both are insanely good, but very different. Dark Souls has some of the best level designs in games and slow-ish but very rewarding combat, Rising has crazy fast CUHRAYZEE combat and one of the cheesiest but best soundtracks I've ever listened to.

I'm just not a big fan of the first person perspective like in Grimrock/Etrian. I'd rather have generic player models but with custom names and portraits attached to them.
