Legitimately no memeing when does it get good.
I bought it on a whim on the steam sale and so far its been a paint by the numbers boring jrpg and the combat is sluggish for a tales of game.
After the desert town.

It's not really gonna get better I'm afraid. The game is full of memes and not even afraid to show it.

You're sort of close. It's more along the lines of the fact that the gamecube was starved for a huge JRPG at the time. This came out and people ate it the fuck up.

Haven't played Vesperia, but Abyss is literally the worst tales game I've played next to Legendia. The combat is downgraded from symphonia, plot is bad, villans even worse, and the last 15 hours is running around talking to people and delivering messages. It blows my mind that people still hold it up as one of the best Tales games.

What other JRPGs play like Tales and Star Ocean?
I need something to play.
>>
>>342898152
It's not necessarily the biggest surprise, but when you realize it and then go back and play it again it's fun to notice the little hints through the game, like how Kratos always stands at the grave where Lloyd's mother is buried when they're at his house or how he'll let Genis and Collette - or really anyone else - sit at 50% HP without flinching but as soon as Lloyd stubs his baby toe he'll spam First Aid on him like there's no tomorrow.
>>
>>342895547
once you enter the 2nd world it starts to pick up. The whole tower journey isn't that interesting.

Later on is when you can start doing silly skill combos.

Overall the game isn't fantastic but it has its moments. That being said whoever designed Ymir forest can go eat shit, fuck that gay dungeon.

There aren't a lot of Jrpgs like those two gameplay-wise.

Summon Night Swordcraft is kinda like a Tales game game play wise. Specifically like Phantasia.
>>
>>342895547
>I bought it on a whim on the steam sale and so far its been a paint by the numbers boring jrpg and the combat is sluggish for a tales of game.
You've pretty much summed up the game right here.
Eternia was light-years faster than the battle system in this one and the story/plot is ripped straight out of ffx.

It only got popular because it was one of the few jprgs on the gamecube, and one of even fewer that wasn't ultra-shit on it, and tha nintendo actually advertised the game for namco.
Otherwise it would be a completely forgotten entry.

It's so one note and predictable that the two mage characters, raine and genus, in the original japanese version are called Refill and Genius, who are the healer and dps mage roles.
Fucking christ.

Tales as a series is the epitome of quantity > quality, made by half a dozen different teams. Each game is mediocre to bad. So if you're comparing a Tales game to your favorite JRPG, chances are it won't stand up. You have to basically ignore all other JRPGs to get into the mindset of wanting to play a Tales game.
>>

>>
>>342896224

It did have Paper Mario TTYD and FF Crystal Chronicles. But those weren't 'traditional' JRPGs that people exapcted. Tales of Symphonia wasn't either however. The GameCube never got what people wanted in terms of a JRPG since PS2 was getting all the JRPG development before it was even launched.

>Well, if what Namco said is to be believed, Microsoft own the rights to Vesperia here in the states

That is 110% bullshit. Bamco just didn't want to spend the money bringing back the voice cast and localizing the new content. Just like all the other Tales games that got second releases with more content.

At least with Graces they waited for the extra content, THEN localized it. They usually rush to localize, release the superior version in Japan, and then tell their western audience to suck it.
>>
>>342900302
Well, some people are skeptical of that claim. Plus even it were true, one would think the rights would have expired by now since it's been a whopping 7/8 years since Vesperia came out on 360.

co-op tales is best.

The problem is when you actually have 4 players, because barely anyone wants to play as the heal spammer.

Also Symphonia 2's monster system which encourages sacrificing a usable character for a powerful AI monster is dumb too, but that's an issue with Symphonia 2 in general.
>>
>>342899556
problem is that ToS came out in like april and TTYD didn't hit until November. also, at that point we only had ToD and ToE, which weren't exactly stellar to get the series rolling in the US

ToS came out on the right system that needed a big RPG with a new battle system (that most people haven't seen at the time) and it just worked.

i went through ToS my first time with 3 friends and with 4 players it was pretty fun. played ToS PS3 with AI and holy shit i wanted to kill myself they do dumb shit.

People have argued endlessly over Akzeriuth since the game's release. It's that kind of ambiguity that makes it so good.

>You are absolutely retarded if you think ToA covers cloning better than any SciFi novel

Let's go with Dune. Gholas are made from the dead cells of humans, but are not able to retain human memory until the experiment with Hayt-Duncan. Further gholas have partial memories that exhibit in emotional episodes related to their past life or lives (in the case of ghola of ghola). Eventually, a ghola of Duncan is awakened to the entirety of the lives of the previous Duncans, but the series ends before that goes anywhere. A major theme of Dune is ancestral memory.

In Abyss, can replicas are created out of anyone or anything so long as you can determine what frequency it resonates at. Yulia's score, at least the fragments that are available to the characters in the story, never accounts for Fomicry and the existence of replicas, leading to Van's idea that the world can be removed from it's deterministic existence by replacing it with a replica world. Replicas are also bound to each other, with the replica being leeching the life out of the original until it becomes the only one. The major theme of Abyss's plot is the malleability of fate, and the major theme of the Luke/Asch subplot is value of a single existence (and the two tracks that play during their final confrontation are named "mirrors" and "meaning of birth" if it wasn't clear enough).

The way Abyss handles cloning fits thematically just as well as Dune, because they are telling different stories with different themes.
>>
>>342907293
Akzeriuth wasn't the party's choice that either falls on Luke or Van and even then it wasn't a Moral choice, and most people discuss either where the blame falls or stupidly suggest that the party shat on Luke for getting duped by Van and not his Behavior afterwards.

ToA "In-depth" discussion of free will is basic JRPG tripe, that doesn't go beyond "do we actually have free will" and "Can people actually handle free will"

And please name a well written Scifi novel that goes less in depth about cloning than ToA

Abyssfags and Symphoniafags are brothers, both games were penned by Takumi Miyajima after all. Every other Tales is skippable.

Free run is a garbage mechanic, Around-Step and Good Air Mobility, and learning to jump shits all over it, If newer games still had instant guard break back attacks I'd never touch free run again.

This.

Also this.

It is a paint by numbers JRPG for the most part. Well, for the entire part, really. But, I like it anyway. I won't defend it's writing or repetitive combat, but I enjoy both.

Every single fucking town my friend. Every single town in every single dimension.

There is always fresh mutton.

I don't get it. Both games are made by the same people and are clearly fun JRPGs even if they're entry level or whatever. Trying to determine what is objectively best is a waste of time but I won't bother /v/ I know you're a glutton for idort punishment.

Is that latter one true? That sounds surprisingly legit given how retarded Kratos heals.

Symphonia is full of twists just like that and they're all pretty well done in my opinion.

I loved Symphonia when I was younger, but after playing Vesperia the combat system is so sluggish. It only gets good after at least like 5 hours when you can unlock a decent amount of artes (tech)

The story is pretty good though. It's super cliche at the beginning but once you get to what you think is the ending, it gets turned upside down. And then you have like at least 30 more hours ahead of you.

But damn it all to hell, this PC port keeps crashing my display drivers.

The Tales series has a problem where they're always trying to make things more complicated. Everything needs to be as complex and ''deep'' as possible, including the design of shit. It started with Abyss and Vesperia, which struck a nice balance, but once Graces and Xillia came out, it had gone too far. The fucking overdesign of everything is ridiculous. While Graces had a simper battle system, the title system was completely unnecessary when it could have had artes tied to levels like normal. Xillia just fucked it all up, with the inclusion of the Lillium Orb shit. It's just needless menuing. You have to go through so many menues and keep track of all characters. It's fucking tedious.

Tales of Vesperia is almost 10 years old and it still looks miles better than the shit Namdai shits out today. Even with the severe framerate issues of that game, it still performs better as well. Why the fuck is this allowed? Are the PS games, PS Phantasia and GC Symphonia the only games with good framerates or something?

Abyss needed some autistic tier Min-maxing to get worth while skills on a first play through. I will agree that Vesperia has the best skill system out of all the tales games, Symphonia is the second best with the only problem is not being remade so it can have the skills of newer tales games.
