Or maybe they replaced dumb video toys with more sophisticated and ultimately fulfilling artistic mediums such as film and literature while your underdeveloped brain still gets its endorphin boost from pressing buttons

Video games actually improve mental faculties like tracking, 3D imagery rotational abilities, visual acuity, etc. Movies aren't all fantastic, and none of them do any of that.

Can't blame them. Vidya gets boring after 2 decades of mashing buttons brainlessly. On the other hand, some movies/series make you think and they aren't a hassle, you can just sit back and enjoy the show.

Video game target market is males aged 25 to 35. They make up the majority of their sales and ads are targeted at them.
>>
>>342883424
They convince themselves it is more valuable because they are watching the news. Even though the news is just the same mindless shit over and over again. They repeat the same stories constantly because not enough interesting things happen for news to be on 24 hours.
>>
>>342883348
It's simple anon. Netflix isn't designed to trigger addictive-like behaviors. Most video games nowadays are designed to cause addictions much like casinos, while netflix doesn't.
Also movies have a lot more intellectual value than video games. I'm not sure what they have on Netflix but movies are a significantly more stimulating medium than video games.

Yep, I'll be playing until I can no longer see.
Because its so much more worse than sitting on my ass watching tv or movies.

I'm happy my partner also enjoys video games, along with no one in my family giving a shit.

In fact, my mother plays mystery games on 3ds, such as zero escape 999, phoenix wright, hotel dusk etc.

My Partner's family hates vidya though, they only put up with it because he started buying them with his own money when he had a job.
>>

I'm going to keep playing video games until I don't have fun with them. I'm still having fun so I'll still play. I don't give a fuck if someone thinks it's childish or whatever. People are stupid and their opinions are worse.

I do things for myself and really don't care about others judgement. It's sad some of you think so much about others perception of you.

When I see all these stories about grandpas and grandmas offing themselves because they have literally nothing to do in their debilitated states makes me wonder whether they would've done the same if they knew about vidya. My grandma learned about the internet a few years back and I noticed a substantial jump in her quality of life.

I hope videogames keep bringing me joy when I'm an old fart.

>>
>>342881071
Honestly it's hard to come home from a 12 hour shift and still have the energy to play a video game - especially if it has any kind of challenge to it. I play video games on the weekend but during the week I would rather watch a movie or tv show.
>>
>>342883081
My experience has been the opposite actually. Most of my friends that never went to college just became boring cunts with shitty routines and zero direction in their lives. They're not unpleasant or anything, but everytime I'm with them it's like their lives never change. Can you imagine how boring it is to catch up with someone after a year without seeing them and them having absolutely nothing new to say to you?

That's a good thing though, less normies in the industry means less oversimplified casual garbage because they dont have to cater to a wider audience.

If these companies pull out of gaming because they cant cater to enough normies to pull a profit that appeases their shareholders then GOOD, it's filtering the cancer. Quality over stale quantity.

My 49 year old dad was in clans in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and Call of Duty: United Offensive, plus a server admin for CoD:UO as well. He played UT and UT 2004, plus Quake 3 Arena, and he's played Doom and Quake. He and I used to play SW Battlefront 2 together all the time... he was a fantastic sniper. Headshots for days. My dads pretty much an FPS guru, but he doesn't enjoy it too much anymore. He hates mindless killing when he used to love it. I don't know, I mean, Ive been playing FPS with my dad since I was 10. It's hard to see him drop the entire genre like a rock, but he's really good at Starcraft II now.

There will never be a video game version of Godfather or 2001. The most sophisticated game out there is something like system shock or planescape. Either way video games are still a childs hobby and is essentially junk food for the mind.

The classics, in general. I don't watch a lot of movies anymore and definitely not a lot of recent things (where only time will tell whether or not they become classics). Some examples of what I would consider real film would be something like Lawrence of Arabia or Late Spring, though. It doesn't need to be hideously obscure like /tv/ will suggest, but it needs to be a unified whole, which the classics tend to be.

Television/netflix is the equivalent of 4chan for older people and normalfags. Very low effort, can just hop in and out without hassle, is stimulating but not challenging, eats up a lot of your time without you realizing it. Both are equally cancerous, and are only fine if you don't turn them into a habit. It's sad when you see someones life ends up just going to work, coming home, doing whatever chores there might be, and then just watching TV until they go to bed every day.

Well, I'll never understand people who slave away on a career all their life for money they probably wouldn't know what to do with to begin with, and breaking up that monotony only by listening to mainstream radio and getting drunk at crowded, dark, loud bars or clubs - an activity centered fully around numbing every single one of your senses - despite the fact that you already don't use them much to begin with.

Call down,I get what you mean but there's no need to abandon all technology to go live as lumberjacks. Just moderation.

Christ this thread is full of so much cringe and idiocy.

Anyway here's my two cents. Video games and movies and any other way you waste your freetime are equally shitty and great.
The problem is narrow minded people who assume x is better than y.
For all the idiots in this thread suggesting movies or Netflix are better alternatives to games you're wrong, and the same goes for the opposite.
To have the mentality that "I pretend to like x because It's adult like" is pathetic, you're not truly an adult but just as stupid as a teenager trying to get into an r-rated movie because it's "mature".
Also you won't get anymore out of one than you will put of the other, you say that by watching movies you gain some deeper intellectual value, but that's subjective as well as retarded.
I mean seriously, unless you're taking your sweet time to rewatch scenes, evaluate camera techniques and analyze subtle symbolism every time you view a shirty b-movie or hot topic-tier show on netflix as if you were some pretentious film student I doubt you'll be doing yourself any better with your time than you would popping in lego indiana jones and playing through a level.

Except for the fact that traditionally it was only aristocrats who had the time/money to build and enjoy a library with live musicians providing background music, plebs were busy being laborers. Later on it was only the upper middle class that had sufficient time and money for that sort of thing and today you need to be first world (or the elite of the third world) to enjoy most of the shit 4chan talks about.

>32 years old.
>Was in a circle of about 16 gamer friends.
>Of the 16 friends, 7 still play regularly, 3 casually.
>The other 6?
I couldn't tell you. I stopped giving a fuck about them years ago. I know I'm a fairly unusual case. I was gaming back when it was still considered "nerd shit" you know, when nerd was actually stigmatic. Grew up next to an airforce base, all those kids owned video game consoles and even PCs back then because their parents could afford 'em. Their constant moving through their childhood meant their hobbies were important to them.

The one thing I really miss though were the insanely intense Halo 1 and 2 LAN parties we used to have in High School. Damn, that was fun.

>18 yr old me
>Had tons of friends from High School
>Knew literally everyone in school, 1000+ friends on kikebook
>Watch over the years one by one as they leave or move on with different interests or get married or just disappear off the map

>Fast forward today
>26 years old
>Down to only a few groups of friends
>Only friends left that I hang out with the most are now anime weebfags
>Rest are working all day or just don't feel like "hanging out" anymore
>Literally never hung out with them in high school or college, only knew them because had a few classes together and got along with each other so we added each other on facebook
>started hanging out with them in the last two years, basically sacking their group
>Doing the whole anime convention crap, playing games, stuff I would've looked down upon in high school, but they don't really know this yet
>some secretly don't like me cuz im a newfag casualfag, the rest love me

feels good. Glad to have backup friends but it's kinda sad I've had to downgrade.

Nigger I graduated HS when I was 20 years old. Even though I'm balls deep in a Chemistry degree with grades that haven't gone below a 9, my dad still feels the need to bring out the fact that I was a fucking loser at high school every single time he meets his friends or we have a family reunion.

I'll give you that but only living as a consumer is pitiful, a better way to put it would be to say there need a to be a balance

>>342887232
Don't really have any favorites since I haven't seen anything in a while,I've been meaning to watch ex machina though but I've been putting it back.

The last thing I can remember was interstellar due to its meme status was alright, like a 7/10 to a soft 8

Are you me?

>Have a friend that called himself a "Gamer"
>Literally the only game he's ever played is TF2 and phone apps
>Never even owned a console before in his childhood
>Gets addicted to TF2 supposedly and says it's ruining his life
>Quits and says I should "stop playing games too"
>I've been playing games since I was3- 4 on my parent's first NES, I do it as a fun hobby, not an addiction
>He doesn't understand this
>Thinks video games are for losers
>Starts smoking weed and drinking every night
>Currently spends his time browsing on tinder, netflix and facebook, going out to parties, frats or clubs trying to get laid day in day out
>Brags about it whenever he manages to bag one ugly slut
>Tries to convince me this is "living"

Yeah, what a happy life.

Its a wonder you weren't born a woman you shallow piece of shit, you have zero friends, all you have is acquaintances and people who tolerate you.
>>
>>342888829

You constantly keep thinking about the fact that you'll die?
>>
>>342883705

You ignorant fuck. The majority of shows watched on netflix are actually binged watched. If you think its not just as addictive or more so you are truly and hopelessly retarded

I for one get antsy if I sit for more than hour doing either vidya or watching movies, but with video games at least I'm devoting my self to a task and developing a skill which gives some sort of satisfaction beyond passively watching something

>Aristocrats were the same as you are now; remarkably beneath
Shifting goalposts, you were saying consumption of media wasn't patrician when that's exactly what it was since they were the only ones who could really do it and the only ones who could patronize the content creators, facilitating the whole thing in the first place.
>Consuming and critiquing media will always be common
It isn't even "common" today if you consider the world's population in total. A lot of people are illiterate and don't even have reliable electricity. Of those who do, there are only a fraction who can dedicate the thousands of dollars to equipment and a home theatre necessary to fully enjoy various mediums, not to mention having enough free hours to enjoy all of it.

>Join Air Force as pilot

>Simultaneously realise I'm basically just in so I can have a rank appended to my name and feel cool about it

I mean it was a great experience, and if nothing else works out, I'll probably go back to it once her career is more flexible. But until then, I've learned a valuable lesson.
