ITT: games that don't have enough flaws to be talked about on /v/

It's almost as if Sony, a billion dollar game publisher, spends millions and millions to market their 7/10 games and inflate their metacritic score the 2 weeks before and the 2 weeks after release.

To be fair, I thought it was ridiculous fanboism until I read the review. It's not even a review. It's the single worst "review" of a game I've ever read, and I've read some Polygon/Kotaku garbage that made me want to vomit. It's so utterly irrelevant and stupid that I would want it removed from any game's metascore.

Overwatch
Oddly enough its talked about still online, but prettymuch nobody even plays it. Hell, just today I was thinking if I should buy some game from the steam sales because I was bored. Then suddenly I remembered that Overwatch exists, I had genuinely forgotten that the game existed for like 2 weeks.
Played one round and wished I had forgotten that it exists. Nobody I know plays it anymore either so I guess thats why I feel that way.

I've literally never seen better, more weighty melee animations in any other game outside of a cutscene. The price you have to pay for having them in the actual gameplay is the sliding-into-place. I really could care less about the sliding when the melee looks that good, though. Half the time the camera zooms in such a way that it hides your feet and you can barely notice anyway.
>>
>>342880771
Actually is because most people can't afford a ps4 or the game
>>
>>342880860
The "lunge" factor is just something I'm used to in Naughty Dog games. In TLOU factions, you can abuse the shit out of it to get lunging melee hits for an instant down. People still don't see it coming somehow.
>>

that review (pic related) is not worthy of being counted among the other critic reviews; it should be a user review. The guy just complains about the story and says nothing about the gameplay or graphics or anything else, probably because he never played the game and just watched youtube shit. It didn't even have a score attached to it. Someone at WP just arbitrarily threw a 4/10 on it when Metacritic told them all reviews must have scores.
>>
>>342877260
Playing at the moment. It's pretty garbage. Enemy conflict is formulaic. The platforming is unexciting and linear. Story is mediocre and full of narrative cliches.

So far 4/10.
>>
>>342877472

>>
>>342878405
Is that Skully? Why does he keep getting jounger in every game
>>
>>342882912
Exactly. I would have said the same had it been a PC or Nintendo game. It's just okay when it's a Sony game.

Metacritic is pure garbage anyway; numeric scores on reviews are a shitty, uninformative way of summing up a game in completely irrelevant ways. IIRC, Rock Paper Shotgun stopped attaching them to their reviews completely.

>>342882765

I disagree. It all happens extremely quickly and the player's focus is on the enemy getting his head smashed into the wall then dropping like a sack of potatoes - not on the player's feet

it has good MP but not many people on /v/ play it because they don't know. People are tired of Uncharted and don't want to like it even if it's good, so people are rating it / judging it a lot more harshly than they were U2 and U3 when they came out.

The pacing is like a movie, and it starts out a little slow. It's still light hearted in tone like the others, but there is some serious character drama in this one. The pacing builds up until the end.

Nadine was the worst thing about the game by far

>Usually you need a nice lenghty wind up which makes the quick punches have impact though.

No, not really. And it would inhibit gameplay. Naughty Dog has some interview out there where they talk all about how they were trying to use long and perfect animations for punches in TLOU, but it made the combat feel slow and cumbersome, so they had to cut frames from the beginning of their punches and make sure that it jumped into the next punch animation without that many recover animations. So it looked like the punches were snapping.
>>
>>342882912
1. Why does it even matter? Your game isn't affected by his review. You have to be a literal console kiddie fanboy to care
2. He doesn't say anything about gameplay because there hardly is any. Hold stick forward, quick time events, a few scripted shooting sequences... It's primarily a story, and a game second. It gets reviewed as such

I've played the game every day since release. I'm going to go play it really soon. Got to get my challenge out of the way. I like the relic system. It will force you out of your regular playstyle. Sometimes they will throw a really difficult challenge your way. I also only use my relics on the Vanity Chests, as buying the chests for sidekicks, mysticals, and hero weapons are just taking gameplay away from you. I'm pretty excited that we are getting new content this week.

what fucking game are big awkward windups required for melee besides gtav? punches can look realistic and still provide a visceral feel, its up to the programmer. its not all or nothing real or retarded.
>>
>>342888653
They were trying to make a man punch things, not make a half demon/half angel with a huge epic sword launch monsters into the air and animation cancel them into a stunlock which makes them totally unable to fight back.
>>
>>342887739

Because North Korea being a legitimate threat is so laughably implausible. Best they could do is nuke the South with a handful of missles, half of which would likely completely fail while in the air, and then immediately get thier shit kicked in by every other major power in the world including China.

>>342878405

>Screen tear all over

This game proved Digital Foundry's methods are flawed because the games performance goes to absolute shit in heavy firefights and action sequences.

It was just flawed and boring as fuck but the press wanted to make it out to be this "Majestic" work of art and "Technical" masterpiece even when Naughty Dog cut a shit ton of corners (Static lighting, aggressive LOD culling, poor texture filtering. Game's as technically competent as a 2012 multiplat). Uncharted 4 is trying to be National Treasure but completely serious, boring and no fun allowed.

Also it doesn't have Nicholas Cage, God Of Kino. So minus more points for Uncharted.

DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta. It's up to pretty much everyone BUT the programmer since most of the impact comes from the amimations and sound design. The length of the wind up should be relative to attack speed of course, but Uncharted's animations are shit.

I like the Uncharted games, but like Last of Us, I cant bring myself to play through them again. Didnt even bother with 4, because when you just have pirate treasure, no weird mystical shit, and "I'll quit for real this time" plot youre out of ideas

Same principle applies, DMC has fast attacks as well but the wind up for those is still very well done and lengthy. And it does not harm gameplay at all.

>>342882765
It is really good. I personally think it is the best multiplayer in the series, but it does lack content. Co-op isn't coming until fall, and right now you only have three modes: Team Death match/TDM Ranked, Command, and Plunder. There is fun to be had if you enjoy leveling up the boosters, guns, mysticals, and sidekicks, but for quite a few people that isn't enough to keep them hooked. I'm fine with it. I know that the other content is coming, but that could be a real deal breaker for some people.

The problem is that it doesn't seem like he played more than the first hour of the game, but feels that is adequate to rip the game to shreds. If you are a critic it is kind of important to have experienced the entirety of what you are pulling apart. If a critic did this same thing for an album or a movie people would tear him to shreds. Most video game 'critics' don't play the games outside of a couple hours, and then start quoting from their EPK anyway. I find critics to be wholly useless. They don't know what I like and what I want. If I listened to critics, I wouldn't read, play games, watch movies, or eat ever again.

People give critics far too much power. At the end of the day those people are incapable of making art themselves. Why trust them?

Videogames simply couldn't handle the god of kino. Motion capture rigs would blow up. His art can only be captured by film.

That's why Cinematic gaming is kinda shit. I played through Quantum Break on PC (Friend gave me a code he got for the xbone version for the PC version) and CIA just chews scenery like the fire rises and is one of the best parts of the game. Seriously, put QB on steam, drop it to $20 and watch it become a cult classic overnight like Alan Wake. Game's lore dense as fuck and quite fun when you figure that if you play it like a cover shooter, you are fucked and gunfights become more exciting. But it's always limited because videogame conventions will always mean it's scripted and linear and the same thing always happens. CIA will say the same thing and you wish that the Gunplay was in a better, more open world game.

See, There's none of that manic spontaneity, the menace, the brooding, calculating fear. The Cage fucking brings to the camera. Cage in a role he really gets into? It's pure, raw, unbridled adrenaline. Even the most Kino of films, he goes full tilt and only escalates the kino further.

No videogame will ever get the nuances, the method, the insanity of Nicholas Cage. That's why Cinematic gaming is doomed, Uncharted is fucking boring and Nicholas Cage owns.

Elijah Wood was literally scared shitless because while he knew Cage was a method actor and shadowed him for a bit while he was preparing for the role. It's a perfectly valid review though. See point 2.
Sony have made the decision to focus primarily on "experiences" rather than games. Therefore people who aren't necessarily big fans of video games are going to play/review them. Pressing a button to initiate a combat animation is not a QTE, it's something you do in every action game.
Square to strike, circle to roll (and thereby dodge), and mash triangle to escape a struggle or a grab. You can interrupt others punches if you hit them while they're winding up, and they can interrupt your windup in the same way (however unlikely, unless its someone hitting you in the back). You run around with the thumbstick and position yourself to be able to do double-team finishers with either Rafe or Sam by attacking the same people.

not him, but in a proper video game, you throw punches and kicks (which you actually have to aim) that hurt your opponent and they do the same back. Here you're pressing a button that locks your character into some canned animation with predetermined outcome.
That's why both these webbums look so ridiculous, the game has to teleport around the character all the time so that he's in position to play the animation. There's no actual gameplay

melee is very powerful because the game is a cover shooter, and they dont want it to fall victim to standard cover shooter problems like never being able to escape being pinned down.
It's easy to beat people down because they want to encourage you to move around the flanks and get close to your enemies, rather than play peek-a-boo from cover as you get naded and flanked yourself. The "struggles" are really there to slow you down in your melee attacks so that pursuing ranged enemies have a chance to catch up to you and shoot you

Wind up isn't important for games but the cool down after a hit is. This is where real impact feelings come from.

Dragon's Dogma for instance. The charging of the warrior isn't nearly as satisfying as the game stopping from the hitstop after you make contact with some poor fags head.

And this Berserk game has the character regaining his posture even if only for half a second, between that and the sound effects you get a serious impression of weight and impact, even if the swings are quite fast.

not a qte. you maintain control of drake's mobility for most of this fight. if this is a qte, so is the finale of MGS4. the only thing that's been changed in this rafe fight is the controls to accommodate a sword. you have options though.

The Snake vs Liquid fight is pretty much a QTE as well, yes. This one even more so. It relies too much on cinematics, grapples, predetermined animations, and a predetermined pace. You can't end the fight sooner by being better, it follows a predetermined pace. You can't just take control of the fight and beat Rafe and get the ending, you have to lock swords a few times then get dis armed then get a new sword tossed over by Sam then have hat sword get broken and then you press a bunch of buttons o struggle with Rafe as he tried to kill Nate then Nate press circle to voice a rope to crush Nate with a bunch of old. Hell, the bottom presses aren't even any different between play through. The fight will play out the exact same,no matter who is playing it.
It's pretty much a QTE.

> It relies too much on cinematics, grapples, predetermined animations, and a predetermined pace. You can't end the fight sooner by being better, it follows a predetermined pace.

You're right, but that's also the nature of the uncharted games. there isn't a ton of room for skill to shine through, and cinematics often determine the pace of the game rather than your play. I see your point but I don't see it as a QTE. god of war has QTEs, to me if you have any further control than its just basic ass gameplay.

>>342903971
>if you have any further control than its just basic ass gameplay

Well than you're probably a retarded monkey. Basic action game sequences wouldn't follow something like the Uncharted 4 fight. Hell, if you wanted to use the argument for and of the Uncharted games you would need to use 1 or 2's final boss scenarios. With Navarro you can end the entire boss sequence by having good aim and liking all of his support then running to the tip of the ship to do the QTE. With Zoran that's an actual fight. There aren't any cinematics involved or predetermined anything. He's an actual boss.

The final bosses in 3 and 4 are absolutely nothing like this. Sure you can move around but there is little control outside of that. You essentially have to wait for the enemy to do painting to trigger a cinematic in order to let the game flow continue. Other than being able to slowly move around the inside of he burning ship, there isn't that much control. You're essentially just watching a QTE unfold. You can't actually defend this fight as anything but a glorified QTE and not look fucking retarded.
>>
>>342904309
I'm not saying it takes the fun out of the game. I'm saying that, because its an arcade game that was sold much cheaper, its okay that they recycled the map. It was sold as Farcry 3: blood dragon anyhow so theres nothing wrong with it

It was that PC fighting game that was massively shilled a few years back and never got released.
It was known for it's over the top gore with real actors.
I remember looking some time back and wondered what happened to it.
It sold or some shit and it was a scam to get money to make a better game called Gorebreaker or some shit.
I just never seen anyone talk about it.

A QTE is an example of a minigame. That doesn't mean that all minigames are QTEs.

>A quick time event (QTE) is a method of context-sensitive gameplay in which the player performs actions on the control device shortly after the appearance of an on-screen instruction/prompt. It allows for limited control of the game character during cut scenes or cinematic sequences in the game.

if anything the final boss is more like a very fast sequence of no-prompt QTEs inside of an arena minigame, where the sequence is random and can be further changed depending on the actions/position/timing of the player

The thing is that the Rafe don't doesn't really do that, and when it does it's all style over substance and they don't have any impact on how the fight plays out. You can pin him against a wall but then he just parries Nathan and then it's back at square one. The actual sequence in how the right plays out is predetermined and as you said is pretty much just a bunch of non prompted quick time events.

1 is a much better paced, more straight forward, game than one. The only thing that 4 does better is gunplay and graphics. The first game is better in every other aspect. It may be the roughest in regards to mechanics, but it's till. Better experience than 4.
>>
>>342906267

well like I said, when you respond with what boils down to "no retard, I'M right" whats the point of trying to convince you otherwise? you won't change your mind, and I don't really care if you do.

the rafe fight was decent, I thought they handled the sword controls well enough. nothing amazing, nothing bad. I view QTEs as a more rigid affair, as seen in god of war or RE4.

>there isn't a ton of room for skill to shine through
this is about the falsest thing I've ever heard anyone say about Uncharted. The better you are at playing it, the more the gameplay starts to look like an actual action movie, even though you are controlling 100% of it. It looks like it couldn't be a game because everything is going so perfectly for you as you keep escaping seemingly impossible odds without a scratch, with the camera always catching the best parts of the action.
It takes a ton of skill to get to that point. This webm doesn't even really count as an example of that because he wasted too much ammo and got shot a few times.
Also, there is the whole multiplayer thing, which is based on competitive gametypes.
>>
>>342906713
>4 just had the polish that really helps this kind of cinematic game.
Well then that's your problem here. The first game isn't a cinematic game like 2, 3, or 4. That means nothing here. It not having cinematics like the others actually helps it be a better game. Is not style over substance like the others all are.
>>
>>342907008
its just pretty out of place compared to the rest of your posts which are rational and fair. like I get it dude, its 4chan and its /v/ and we're all super mean and we talk shit and its cool! but it doesnt help your argument.

anyways, i guess we just have different definitions of QTEs. I dont mind them much personally, especially in the rafe fight. it didnt railroad me as much as other QTEs tend to.

>>
>>342907196
Is that when supposed to support your argument on skill? Half of it is just blind firing.
>>
>>342907417
>There is room for skill

Barely. Uncharted has a very low skill ceiling and only equires patience andnplanning, the former more so than the latter. Patience is needed for the regenerating health and planning is needed to know where your enemies are coming from. That's pretty much it. There's no skill to melee because the melee is all shit throughout the entire series. The gunplay doesn't take skill either.
>>
>>342907475
the hard part is not blind firing, it is wiping out 12 heavily armed mercs without clearly getting hit. Whack-a-mole doesn't work for this; you will get flushed out and surrounded. What is key is movement and positioning.

>>342907417
why is crushing bullshit? Because it takes skill to beat? And yes it is a casual game by nature (who cares?), but it can be for anyone if you adjust the difficulty level and the aim-assist slider to your liking.

You think so. I find melee so god damned satisfying in 4 that I was sprinting my ass around the fights causing diversions just so I could run up and wail on some dude's nutsacks before smashing his skull into the wall. I really liked the combat influences Last of Us had here; what I hated was the horrible aspirations towards being 'mature.' Uncharted was jaunty and should have stayed jaunty.

no, I'm arguing that getting the timing + positioning right just to get behind the cabinet in time to blindfire right into the choke point (without being hit beforehand) takes skill, because those doors open no matter what while you are still fighting like 3 remaining guys in the ballroom. Taking out all those guys while only being hit like 3-4 times like in the webm takes *some* skill, but as I'd mentioned, that webm doesn't even really count as a good example. It's hard to find clips of people actually killing loads of dudes on crushing without being obviously hit, but it does happen. And it gets progressively harder to maintain this longer the fight goes on and the harder the fights get

Every game nowadays gets forgotten after a day of it's release. This was most prominent to me with GTA V. Okay? That doesn't change anything I did. It just looks nicer because of the newer engine. At its core it's the worst melee in the series.
>>
>>342911487
Sitting behind a desk and spending 15 seconds blind firing at enemies idiotically rushing into a room does not take skill. Mashing triangle after an enemy grabs you then mashing square to kill them does not take skill. Running over to an enemy behind a pillar then mashing square to kill them does not take skill. Nothing in that even supports your argument of Uncharted taking skill.
>>
>>342911498
why is it the worst? It's barely different from 2, just instead of dodging counterattacks, triangle makes you overpower theim in a struggle. Both games you press triangle for essentially the same reason.

And 3's melee system took the roll/cover ability away from you when you were close to an enemy to make it into the grab-button. Terrible design choice.

>It doesn't have 360 no scopes so it cant take skill
the skill is not in the individual actions like that (not until the latter parts of the game when you face overwhelming force, anyway), it's the way you strategize your attack and plan out your movements/positioning so as to get the most from these actions (such as blindfiring) using the limited ammo you have. It requires quick thinking and good decision making to not get trapped and killed, let alone to not get hit. Aiming takes no more / no less skill than in any other controller game.

>inb4 muh auto aim
you can turn it completely off

Also, you never mention multiplayer. Does that not take skill? If not then how come some players are so much better than others?

You idiots have really shallow tastes. It's always style over substance with you uncharted famboys. As long as it's flashy and fast the quality doesn't matter. Reminds me of hat idiot in /ps4g/ who think Uncharted 3 is the best game in the series because it had the best set pieces.

You didn't mention MP either, dumb ass. Also the skill ceiling in Uncharted means shit when you have stuff like mysticals, ai assistant, aim assist, and boosters to give you an edge over other players.
>>
>>342895396
>not him, but in a proper video game, you throw punches and kicks (which you actually have to aim) that hurt your opponent and they do the same back. Here you're pressing a button that locks your character into some canned animation with predetermined outcome.
It's just auto-targetting pham. Same thing in Dark Souls where if you attack with lock-on your character changes direction with the animation.
>>
>>342913830
I did too mention it, in this post >>342907196
Just thought it might be relevant considering you're saying the game doesn't take any skill.

>Also the skill ceiling in Uncharted means shit when you have stuff like mysticals, ai assistant, aim assist, and boosters to give you an edge over other players.
How are you getting an edge over them when they can just use the exact same things as you right back at you, maybe even using them more effectively than you? BTW aim assist cannot be adjusted for MP, it is the same setting for everyone. It's no lower of a skill ceiling than a class based shooter
>>
>>342913397
they re-simplified it because 3's more complicated melee system slowed down the overall pace of the game and led to situations where you were very often getting shot in the back as you were in melee, or where you couldn't flee when you needed to. Melee is supposed to be a very fast, very powerful tool in your arsenal, but the game is a shooter at heart >>342897084

That isn't a word. You also mean removed. It removed all of those features, they aren't even in the game. They aren't "simplified" they're gone.
>>
>>342914657
The mere fact that it even has aim assist shows that it has a very low skill ceiling. I would be inclined to believe that it took some semblance of skill (the MP) if it didn't rely on aspects like AI assists, revives, boosters, mysticals, and aim assist. Those are all very casual multiplayer assets which remove skill, not add to them. Feel free to keep trying to argue that any facet of Uncharted takes skill. I need a good laugh.

>>342918013
doesn't change anything about what I said. Those features didn't suit the core gameplay and so they were removed
>>
>>342915306
Also half of those other combat features weren't from 3, they were from 2 and 1. I don't know why you're only focusing on 3.
>>
>>342918340
What? That completely changes everything you said. You said they were simplified. They weren't simplified at all, they were removed.

Also I fail to see how the melee in the other games messed with the pacing. The reason why enemies would constantly shoot you in the back in 3 had absolutely nothing to do with melee, it had to do with the awful level design and enemy placement. Melee is an irrelevant factor there.

Are you retarded?

Some implementation of aim assist is built in to almost all console shooter by default because analog sticks are clumsy as fuck. Lately, they have started to include the option to turn it off, but that's just to make people like you feel better about themselves if/when they try the game, before they say "Why am I even trying to play with this shitty controller? I can't hit shit. Fuck consoles, I'm going back to M+KB"
>>

There's no aim assist in Halo or Gears

The melee system in 2 is not even more complicated than the melee system in 4. Instead of ducking under your punch and grappling/counterattacking you so you have to press triangle to prevent them from hitting you, they grapple with you or throw you against the wall and struggle with you so you have to press triangle to prevent them from hitting you.

It's the same shit. And yes, it was actually made simple again when they went from 3 to 4 because both 2 and 4 had equally simple melee, contextually:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ7S-foA5JY

>I fail to see
It messed with the gunplay in 3 (only in 3) because 3 tried to have it be too much of a minigame in and of itself, and - like I've said multiple times - because it frequently prevented you from rolling away while you were in "melee mode," even while you were being shot.

Look, I'm not saying 2's or 3's is bad, I'm just saying I prefer 4's overall. All of them had some fantastic animations and the melee-only fights in 3 were the best

Not sure what halo games you're talking about (there are like 10 of them now) but I know for a fact this is false at least up to Halo 3. When your crosshair is red because it is over an enemy, aim assist is on and your hitscan bullets will connect.

Yes there is, have you never played a fucking Halo game?

I'm just now playing this and it's very weird. Maybe it's because I've never played BB or DeS, but there's just something kind of off in the level design that I can't really put into words. The game as a whole is much better than II but there's something not there that the first game had despite the devs trying to make you forget II happened so much. I think it have something to do with how the paths branch out.

Also the tone is too "epic" which II tried to do. You'd never hear something like the first game's menu music in II or III.

Aim assist in Halo is literally just "reticle becomes slower when goung "trough" an enemy".

There is no snap-on, no auto-follow and hitscan bullets hit when the reticle is over an enemy because of fucking course they would, that's how hitscan works on PC too.

that's an implementation of aim assist. It's why you can "swipe snipe" in Halo

thumbsticks are clumsy and devs have always acknowledged this

Just replayed and Platinumed UC1 and 2 plus the extra Remaster Trophies they added.

Working on 3 now, then moving on to replaying and Platinuming 4.

The multiplayer is fun as fuck as well.
OP is a faggot.

>The melee system in 2 is not even more complicated than the melee system in 4.
It is. It has brutal combos and Dodges. That's more than 4. In 4 you just mash square then get grappled then mash triangle to break it then mash square again. In two you have Dodges, grapples, regular melee and brutal combos. Hell you even have the same system where you can beat an enemy against something or vice versa. It's literally 4 with more features.

Once again, the melee in 3 has nothing to do with the enemies constantly flanking the player. That hasto do with thenpiss poor level design and enemy placement. The same thing would happen even if there was no melee system.

>Look, I'm not saying 2's or 3's is bad

What? You should. Uncharted has shit melee, all of them do. Uncharted games all have the same shitty melee system, 4 just has the least amount of features.

>>342884557
All I remember about this game is that it had a nice ass on the cover
>>
>>342920250
>>342924196
2 and 4 have the same amount of melee features. In 2, dodges and grapples were all a part of the enemy resisting your attack, and you had to press triangle to overpower them. Then you continued to press square to strike them. "Brutal combos" were just mashing square, you do the same thing in 4., only you mash it instead of pressing it once. 2's was not harder because they telegraphed it a lot

One cool thing I do remember from 2 was that one of the enemy counters put a pistol to your head. I never failed that one but it was on crushing so it probably would have killed me
>>
>>342925226
Brutal combos were not just mashing square. How could you not remember such a stupidly easy como system? It was literally square triangle square for a stronger, faster, melee kill. 1 and 2 had brutal combos. 3 got rid of it but added a bunch of other stuff. 4 has less melee features than all the other games. 4 does not have more features than 2. Despite how simple 2 is, it somehow he a better melee system than 4.

No innovation across 5 titles, sounds like a good and valid point that gets old after repeating it for so long.
