People have all different opinions about it. FF1 is one of the most story-light out of all of the games and is a bit old-fashioned mechanically. FF4-6 are the "classic" Final Fantasies, and FF7-9 are the "modern" Final Fantasies. The very early ones have shaky mechanics and the later ones start to sag in quality. They're all reasonably good games for the most part, though.

Nothing, A lot of people say 2 is shit, but I liked it. Bosses are neat, story is alright for the time. Leveling sucked.
1 is more of an old school dungeon crawl. I liked it.
3 is like 1 but better in most ways, first game with a class change system. I personally hated it, but eh.
11 was the first mmo, I think the servers are shut down now.

I'm actually playing through FF1 & 2: Dawn of Souls on GBA right now.
FF1 is pretty fun so far, really simple in terms of mechanics and strategy and they tried to make it easier on the player by giving more EXP/Gil on defeated enemies. I have aroun 5 - 6 hours in so far, entire party is close to level 30 and I just activated the first crystal.
I've heard FF2 is shit in comparison, since the level up system is fucked. Basically, you have to attack your own teammates to level up your defense and do a bunch of dumb shit to up your stats, leading to a real boring grindfest.
I haven't played FF3, the only way to play it is through a fan translated ROM hack of thr NES version or play the DS/iOS/Steam remake.
FF4 is when the series starts implementing characters and story at the forefront, and a lot of people have nothing but high praises for the SNES FF's (4, 5, 6).
I've never played any of the FF's either, but I plan on finishing this remake of FF1. It's pretty good so far.

The first game is a genuinely bad game. Genuinely shit. It's worth playing for it's cultural significance or for completionist's sake, but expect a miserable time. I'm solely talking about the NES version, not sure if the other iterations improved the game.

Going to give you a brief summary
>Each FF is a seperate adventure, nothing happens or continues from one final fantasy to another. You're just there for the story.
1-6 are 2D pixel games
7-13 are 3D, but 7 is pretty dated right now

Since I've playing 7-13 i'm going to go with what I know, but i'm sure this applies to 1-6 as well

The biggest hurdle I can see anyone getting over now is how dated the old games look. Or they find the game "poorly paced" where they can't find the next point of the story to go. Just enjoy it, because once it's over, you'll find out you've just lost a part of your soul that you'll never get back, no matter how hard you try.

Some of the games are really a masterpiece (IX being the best imo) So this part is true but regarding the battle type, 1-3 are turn based, 10 is turn based, 4-9 are ATB (turn based-ish with a gauge that fills during the battle allowing you to take your turn)
12 is NOTHING like Kingdom Hearts at all, its sort of like 11 with the gambit system, its kind of weird, I wouldnt recommend as a first.
Try IX if you want to see a masterpiece, start with 7 for a great game if you can look past the dated graphics, go with 4 if you want to see a good introduction and see where it all began evolving or go with 6 which is an amazing game all around.
Nobuo really is a genius, be sure to appreciate the music.

That one's terrible. It's based on the GBA version which made huge changes to the game, the biggest of which is it takes the magic system from the later games and sticks it into FF I (which had a different magic system than any other game in the series except for III). The old magic system was annoying, yeah, but the game isn't re-balanced much for the new one, and that combined with all the items they added from later games like higher tier potions and Phoenix Downs kinda ruins the game. If that sounds like a good time to you, then play the PSP version. If not, I'd recommend either the NES or the PSX version on normal mode.

FF XIII-2 is pretty fucking good. Better than XIII in every single way. I have no idea how Square managed to fuck up so hard with XIII. XIII-2 fixed most of the problems with XIII

Yeah you can. XIII-2 is really a standalone story. I mean, of course the characters from XIII appears but the main focus is on Serah, Lightning and two new characters (Noel and Caius)

Everyone has their favorites and the ones they hate. What FF represents and should be is different for pretty much everyone. I've seen different people swear by playing 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 first. The main series isn't connected other than 4's after years, 10's X-2, and 13's XIII-2/Lightning Returns (XIII-3). So just pick whatever appeals to you most because fans of the series have VASTLY different taste. Chances are if you blindy play some anons favorite ff it may be one that wouldn't have done anything for you in the first place and trying to force yourself through it will just turn you off from the series because you will think that's supposedly the greatest FF but it's just that anons favorite.

they actually made it stupidly easy to progress. They added in a bunch of exp buffs and you can party up with npc characters. You can solo pretty much the entire story mode of the game, which you pretty much have to do because it's a ghost town now.

its literally one of the worst long running series out there and its a joke that people actually praise them, none of them beat your average mobile game in depth, the writing is fucking atrocious considering they are supposed to be RPG's, the combat fails to be even average let alone decent in any of them, the fucking story is worse than in naruto, and they are absolutely packed to the brim with padding, time wasting and terrible minigames
do not play a single one of them unless you like endless random battles and a laughably shallow combat system
also the games are painfully linear with the illusion of being open because you sometimes have an empty as fuck "overworld"
the series probably peaked in the midgar section of 7 because the characters are pretty interesting, OST is good, good balance of bosses, only involves a good minigame ( the racing part) and the prerendered backgrounds look good
after that it dawns on you how bad even that game is
