Why did this flop?
Nobody cares about a new Linux when you can already have Steam on any OS and there's lots of better distros for anything you might ever need, especially when there's a shitload of games that run on Windows only and you can use Wine for those anyway.

No marketing, and people are under the assumption that you need to buy a console to get it.
The real issue with SteamOS is that you're literally crippling your Steam library if you choose it over Windows as it offers very little performance advantages.
Valve should use their infinite money to just buy more ports.

Microsoft NEUTERED it with Xbox Play Anywhere. Valve should've tried harder when they had the chance.

Just about every game available on SteamOS is already available on Windows, but the same cannot be said the other way around.
