The graphics and performance should have been better.

The entire "dash into enemy" mechanic is at odds with Mega Man game design and causes problems

Very poor management is what it ultimately boils down to. 4m + some more from a publisher is significant money, enough to do a very good job if focused, but it's not a LOT of money, it's not enough to fuck around with or try to get crazy. I've worked at software startups (which is essentially what this was) and it's shocking how fast it's possible to burn through a funding round if you aren't very disciplined, or even if you are (though they weren't). People joke about Inafune being "a businessman" but the whole problem is that he most definitely is NOT a businessman, he is the classic pure artist creative type. He can do good work if he's under the whip of an experienced good project manager and he can focus on what he's good at and have other people in charge of the rest, but he sucks at running the whole shebang himself. They got very distracted, for example they promised way too many ports day 1, worked on anime and other tie-in stuff, again simultaneously. These are all things you do as a small startup AFTER a successful launch of the core on one platform.

I mean, yes the game itself has tons of issues too. But the above is a super obvious, objective basic example of total mismanagement. Inafune burned a ton of money on nada, which then created a vicious feedback (they had to start cutting, which fucked up other planning, necessitating more cuts and delays), the whole problem with community relations was mismanagement, etc etc.

He looks like he may do ok under Microsoft's thumb, so he may keep on going in the industry in a specific focused art role. But he'll (hopefully) never be allowed to run his own thing ever again. He blew it, he sucks at it.
>>
>>342844243
It's less "still" anon, if anything it may be the extra money that was the problem. If they'd only received 900k even Inafune probably wouldn't have been tempted to embark on a lot of the crazy shit, aiming to port to everything under the son, doing tie-ins, etc. They would have been forced to be leaner. Instead they got way more then they asked for, and instead of just saying "ok, now we have a cushion for when things go wrong (which they always do), and can simply make the same game have better graphics and more testing", they got stars in their eyes and immediately embarked on stupid stretch goals and crazy hires and crap that would have easily sucked up 20x the amount instead of 4x. Too much can sometimes be just as dangerous or more as too little, changes expectations too. It's like devhell, when a game is "in development" for 7 years+. It's easy to fall into the mindset of "well, now we have to make it even better to justify such a long dev time!" and pretty soon it becomes impossible. Somebody at some point has to put their foot down and give up on perfection or else kill it.

Feels like they made the levels before they made the mechanics, making it feel very unpolished. The game is generally ridiculously but then it throws OHKOs at you out of nowhere in cheap. The entire Call stage is horrible.

Ray is kinda fun but like >>342843719 said, the difficulty is all over the place. She;s more fun than Beck because you don't have to worry about the dash gimmick, but she doesn't really feel like she belongs either. The levels definitely weren't made with her in mind.

Overall the game is very unpolished and amateurish. Even if Inafune isn't the father of Megaman, you'd still think he would have learned something after 20+ years of games.

They really should have gotten the first game out of the door before trying to expand the franchise. Having 2 MN9 games planned, a MN9 cartoon, Red Ash, a Red Ash anime, and porting to 11 consoles all at once?

The fuck were they thinking
>>
>>342844841
the problem is people gave money to a bunch of hacks

They wasted more money on porting the game to every console ever than on making the actual game, hence why it ended up being this shit.

>>
>>342843885
The worst thing is how you have to dash into the enemy immediately for 100% absorption.

It's like, why is there even a sniper rifle if the game is just going to call you a shitter for actually sniping anything with it?

I hate games with grading systems based on performance. This is the only reason I couldn't enjoy the Zero series.

What do you think is more likely to fail, getting 30 dollars to make a meal for the evening, or getting 30,000 dollars and being urged to spend all of it? Project inflation is fucking up a lot of kickstarter projects.
>>
>>342851765

>That voice
>good
>>
>>342852574
Basically this. Having project constraints can often lead to a better end result and force the creator to think outside the box. Giving too much power or resources can harm a project unless the lead knows how to allocate them. Its kind of like Lucas with Star Wars. But the sad thing is I think theres a decent game here that someone tried to save. Someone should do a fan 8bit demake
>>
The level design was either bland or shit. It's like they forgot what some of the Mega Man games did wrong and put them into MN9, shit like instant death electricity for example. The dash mechanic dragged down the game more than anything.

Also, no obligatory boss rush near the end game.
>>
Whats weird is it seems the game encourages you to be reckless with the dash instead of the conventional platform pace. Normally shit like that would get you killed
>>
>>342852953
I wouldn't even call it constraints. The thing with the kickstarter money is that it isn't really his own. Otherwise he could have just made the game the way he wanted it to be and that's okay. A budget that is too big is still a constrained budget. Only making the game he meant to make with 900k would not legally be embezzlement, but it would certainly be the closest thing that he can't go to jail for.
>>
>>342853194

You can blame that on Boss Rush mode being a stretch goal.

Can't put in the main game if it's gonna be its own mode.
>>
>>342843885
Ray's gameplay compliments the mechanic. As she's a melee character she could instantly do it anways, but on top of that when she kills, she instantly absorbs at 100% rate so it's not even a problem. Her dash damages too and if it kills (which it can one-shot a lot of things), it also absorbs. Overall she's just more fun despite the mode being more difficult due to overall game design.

>>342843719
The story could work in an inevitable sequel but HAHAHAHAH

>William White is really Bill Blackwell and Dr Blackwell is his father
>Blackwell himself didn't really do anything wrong and was framed so he's not even really a Wily
>Acts like he's so great after Trinity's shit is stopped
>Blackwell says that you aren't a visionary for fixing problems you caused in the first place
>White goes off with a "You'll see, you'll all see!"

I'm sure a subsequent sequel would make White an antagonist, creating more mighty numbers to prove how great he is
>>
>>342845441

>He's a businessman, not a creator

Inafune didn't have any of the talent at capcom to carry his bullshit this time
>>
>>342852608
>Using english voices

Not gonna touch those french voices
>>
>>342854184
oh man I forgot about that shit

a fucking boss rush in a megaman game as a stretch goal
>>
I dunno about the whole "Inafune didn't create Mega Man" thing that I seem to keep seeing lately, though. Kitamura did make a sprite of Mega Man first, it's true, but Inafune designed what we now think of as Mega Man today in official art, based off of that sprite. Had it been anyone else, Mega Man could have looked very different. Just look at how the Mega Man from Captain N turned out based on someone else's interpretation of the in-game sprite with nothing else to go on. So at the very least, I think Inafune should at least be credited as co-creator, if nothing else, even if people are really upset with him as of late.

>way too many ports day

And it turns out that Inafune isn't even a good businessman. The entire project was mismanaged.
>>
I would say the number one error was that they were too ambitious. They were high on the rush of having so much funding from crowdfunding and didn't consider the consequences of their stretch goals and promises.

Let's say, for example, that it was PC only, no need to spend any money on ports. That alone would have given the project a lot of focus. But no, there was supposed to be a cartoon and fifty different ports and all this other bullshit, and here we are.

All of the platform porting.

What advantages did the grading system give in MMZ? I didn't care too much about it when I played it
>>
>>342874071

In Zero 2 and 3 clearing a level at high enough rank got you the bosses skill.

In Zero 4 they made that tied to the weather system so the score system wasn't as important.
>>
>>342874071
Getting S or A ranks give the bosses an additional attack. In MMZ2, 3, 4, beating the bosses with a S or A rank will unlock a new attack. Other than that, getting high ranks is also a self-imposed challenge if you want.

>>
>>342880867
Why are instant kills out of nowhere in boss fights so common in this game? Like, it kind of makes sense on Battalion because he has a huge fuckoff windup with a mini-cinematic for his instant kill, but even then you're probably gonna die to it the first time because of how fast the bullet comes out combined with not knowing the timing. But in this fight, it's all "oh yeah he's got bigger flames after he went in front of the screen, next 3 attacks or something like that are death". Same with Countershade and his purple bullets.

Keep in mind I haven't actually played the game but I watched both Trihex and Floe's playthroughs so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. Still, I swear normal Mega Man games didn't do this shit at all. Literally the only one I can remember is that one nuclear bomb boss in Mega Man 10 where if you shot the glass part of his head, you'd blow up the level and die. Even then that shit sucked anyway and it was the only time a boss had an instakill gimmick iirc.

That's Mega Man Unlimited.

The Mega Man series proper only really had instant kills when the arenas had pits and part of their attack pattern was trying to get you into that pit. I.e. Mecha Dragon, Storm Eagle, Pegasus asshole from Zero 4 etc.

But outside of that, you're right. Megaman generally tries to keep its difficulty honest.
>>
>>342884689
You don't. You just use Maniac Mode when you make a new file.

Enjoy your OHKO artificial difficulty mode.
>>
>>342884985
It takes averagely 5 minutes with Zero under 20% health for that move to even come out.

The fight is pathetically easy as a lot of X5, if you're fucking around that much - and I don't even LIKE X5 - it's basically more of an easter egg than a "Fuck You" move forcing you to restart arbirtrarily for not being able to evade it on the first try.

You know, immediate trial and error, what action games thrive on.
>>
>>342882880
The dash doesn't do damage its just how you finish off enemies that are glowing.

You can see in the webms that he still has to dash when the bosses turn purple at certain thresholds.

Ray doesn't need to do this however.
>>
>>342881882
Even when it comes to bosses with spikes/pits in their arena I can't recall many where it was actually a threat. Like Burst Man and Tengu Man could get you pretty close but it was more of a scare tactic than anything.

Like, the only one I can think of is Red from Mega Man X7, and that's not probably not the best game to be compared to.
>>
>>342885223
I can't remember him using it on me, but I just remember it because games like to use it a lot (fake zero in X6, zero virus in network transmission, etc) and I remember hearing it was a OHKO.
>>
It seems like people are very confused about who actually developed this but if you look at the credits you can see that Inti Creates are the ones who are credited as developers and if you watch the documentary Inafune flat out tells you that Comcept was only feeding ideas to Inti Creates who were actually developing the game. So, yeah, Mighty No. 9 was made by Inti Creates.
>>
>>342885721
>Like, the only one I can think of is Red from Mega Man X7, and that's not probably not the best game to be compared to.

Yeah, Red is just absolute bullshit. The directions you have to HOLD THE BUTTON to be able to climb walls when he knocks you are completely arbitrary as they change with the camera angles and you'll be near to pits a whole fucking lot.

I wasn't having a good time with the game. When I reached that point, I figured I might as well stop and go play better things.

I haven't really been proven wrong ever since.
