It would be foolish to buy a 970 now when the 480 is coming out. The 480 is the same if not more powerful and uses less power, and costs less, and actually has 4GB of ram.
Also by the sound of it your upgrading from some kind of prebuilt pc. You may need to upgrade the CPU and PSU, depending on what you have.

Laptop gamer for the record, made a retard mistake of playing games using the wrong graphics card for a while. Sorted out drivers and now even this laptop's mobile GPU can play Doom and Dork Souls 3 etc totally fine. Got it for about the price of a console too, was a clearance sale on last year models. This thing originally costed well over a grand apparently.

The AMD 480 isn't as good as they are making it look. Has it not been stated that the most amazing benchmarks people were touting were in fact 2 RX 480 cards running together, not one? I''m fairly certain that's what has been indicated. And at a $200 price point, you're only getting 4GB of RAM on the card. Maxing out the graphics in DOOM requires at least 5GB, so anyone buying a 480 is still going to fall short. You may as well buy a 1070 and get 8GB of RAM from the get-go.
