Taro made a point that he makes most of his games in a way to justify why you have to murder your way through thousands of people. Games he make tend to have a lot of killing because that's what sells. Taro just made sure it makes sense why you do what you do. In Drakengard, he made the protagonist a psychopath. In Nier, he made the protagonist think he is doing the right thing. It makes perfect sense, and as such the gameplay is merged with the plot. And the darkness of the story is linked to the player's actions and not jut shown in cutscenes.

Haven't played Drakengard 3 yet but from what I heard the protag is literally a prostitute.
Taro builds up hope, and then he crushes it. He does the same thing with the girls in his stories by making them cute or sexy and then flipping your expectations on their head just as you were starting to see them as potential waifus.

I feel like the only people who say this are people whose experience with "Platinum games" is playing through MGR once.
Nier was exactly the kind of game Plat would make, except the execution was shit because Cavia wasn't up to the task.
As an example:
Hideki Kamiya, much like Yoko Taro, is a fan of old-school shmups.
So he made an entire level in Bayonetta that's literally a clone of Afterburner where you surf on a missile. If enemies get too close to the missile without you shooting them down, the game turns into a 2D-locked side-scrolling beat-em-up while you fight them off the length of the missile.
Plat's actually somewhat infamous for all the genre-switching minigames; TW101 caught a lot of flak for how many were included.
Meanwhile Taro made a game that, despite its shallow combat, featured
>an opening scene that drags on forever through killing like 90 cannon fodder enemies
>air dodge rolls
>a combo hit counter that could get into the 100s
>aim-driven spells
>a heavy emphasis on timing and evasion in boss fights
Nier was absolutely a cuhrayzee game; he even listed God of War as a major inspiration. The problem was, like God of War, the combat wasn't well-tuned.
Taro and Plat make very similar games. The difference is, where Plat nails the execution they can't craft the world/story, and Taro fumbles the execution but the world/story is a masterwork.
I think making "Bayonetta: Written by Yoko Taro" is EXACTLY the sort of thing a Nier sequel always needed to be. People say Nier "wasn't about the combat" but that's just because they look past that weak element to what the game does right, not because Taro didn't WANT the game to have combat as a focus.

I don't entirely agree.
With a fast paced game like Bayo or Rising, putting quiet parts like exploring towns or just moving around the map would feel extremely out of place. The combat is so intense, that spending it long parts without action would ruin it.
Nier's gameplay must be slower to fit with the rest of the pace of the narrative and exploration. It's not a cuhrayzee game and it shouldn't try to be.
That being said, an improvement in the combat was absolutely necessary.

I have, and it's one of my favourite games actually. It's a different kind of pause. No pause in Bayonetta is too long unless self-imposed like you mention. Pauses in action games are necessary to give you a break, but the pacing is always moving forward.
Nier had a pacing more similar to that of a JRPG. It's not just the exploration (optional after all), the narrative and level design is also imposing you a slower pacing. A contrast too big between combat and narrative could have a negative impact.
But hey, just speaking hypothetically here. The gameplay shown so far looks beyond perfect.

It is kind of murky how the cycles of replicants work - on a day by day matter, the androids handle both funerals and births, reusing the material so to say.

In Nier Gestalt, the World of the Recycled Vessel DLC has you go through Father Nier's journal from his youth, which has you play as his younger model.

The reason Nier and DoD won't likely get ported is cost; they were devkit-developed games and porting would mean a serious investment of labor (especially dealing with the work of the now-defunct Cavia).
The reason NierA has a good chance of being ported is also cost; Plat's engine is PC-ready with minimal effort, they've already done 4 PC ports which have been fairly decent (better than the controller-locked only-gamma-setting affairs of some studios, but shit like undisableable negative mouse accel and 1080/60 caps can get kind of irritating), it would literally be a matter of pressing "cook for Windows" and taking a coffee break.
