I'm not a big game marketer guy, but I feel like the market for those sorts of games is far more difficult on Steam than on mobile or 3DS.

Like, if you release your game and it's a solid platformer then that's great, but there's a million solid platformers on Steam and you might not have anything that will make it stand out. I don't even wanna play just a normal platformer on my gaymen PC unless it looks really stylish or has polish or some gimmick that makes it worth looking at. Kids don't play on gaming laptops on steam as much as they do on their phones nowadays.

Now, put it out on 3DS, there's much fewer platformers to compete with so you stand less of a chance of being washed by the masses. You're targeting a somewhat smaller but potentially more willing to purchase audience.

On mobile there are shitloads of apps and they're all garbage, but there do exist people that are desperate for good mobile games that aren't f2p ad infested shit, and if you advertise on the right places you might get their attention. There's lots of platformers on the app store, few of them are good. You might be able to get away with just being good and not stand-out. I was just the other day posting in a thread on one such forum about a guy who released a game which was a mobile open-world dog game with a comic book art style and a bunch of people bought the game and gave feedback. It was very shitty but people on mobile have much lower standards than on steam. People in the thread actually liked it, but if I played it on Steam it would be completely unacceptable levels of jank and bullshit.

I'm just saying, consider doing ports to platforms with different consumer bases if it's not too much trouble (how difficult porting is probably depends on what you're making it in).

Just finished my first semester learning to do basic programming at uni.

Aced it, had a lot of people hanging off my dick for help to get through assignments. I never touched programming before, but I've done shit like used memory editors on PSP/PC/mobile games to hack games and hooking method calls. It's all about being able to think the right way I find, the syntax is secondary.

Personally I'm sick of hearing proc gen, but that doesn't mean I have a problem with it in principle. Depending on the game, a well designed level can be a whole lot more fun than dozens of randomly generated ones. As such, you typically have to spend a lot of time tweaking different variables to have acceptable randomized level layouts.

Spelunky is a good example of this, where there are a lot of hand-made presets that the randomization touches upon to create the different levels.

However, as a programming exercise or thought experiment, proc gen can be fun to figure out.

That's a lot of what's interesting about it to me, it's fun to design systems that generate stuff with enough variety for it to feel fresh and exciting but still balanced and designed well.

If I had to be honest, my drawing skills outside of smaller scale pixel art is pretty mediocre to average; most of my "experience" is just animating stuff since 2003 but never sitting down and learning how anatomy or any of that sort works.

I started doing pixel art some two-three years ago, and simply kept doing different animations (not for this game, but just in general) on a semi-weekly basis up until I learned enough tricks to do it comfortably.

Hell, here's an old sprite of the same character in that gif from the start of 2014.

Also learn color theory and don't be afraid to use a ton of contrast, most amateur sprites can be improved by a massive margin with a tiny bit of hue shifting on the shading and with a lot more contrast and darker colors.

OP here. Cat Weapon has pretty much just began development. Off to a good start. This game isn't going to be full of heavy code, so it should take me less than a week to finish it.

Art assets might add more time onto development, and I can't compose so I will commission people to make music for the game when the art is done.

It actually works if you have the self discipline. If you can't motivate yourself to put your nose on the grindstone for a few hours a day then go to school. Even if you look at most CS jobs on the market they say that a degree is optional. Hiring teams are much more interested in what you have done. I haven't really thought of any story, but from when I first thought up of the game I remember thinking about the bird character avoiding turrets firing at them whilst they were in the sky. The story will have something to do with an evil empire or army.

On ground, the enviroments are laid out similar to Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, but you traverse he big levels similar to 3D Selda games and XenoBlade Chronicles.

In the sky however, the gameplay is similar to that of Nights Into Dreams/Star Fox/Panzer Dragoon.

The enemies are most likely going to be soldiers of the evil empire/army that I thought of.

There will also be indoor tombs that lead up to boss fights that give you limited amount of flight inside of, that is where most of the puzzles will be.

Boss battles however do require a lot of flight, and a bit of ground movement here and there.

Going to be making a game with a Build engine esque aesthetic.

Having trouble deciding weather or not I want to push for billboarded sprites or models with constraints and animations ( IE visually snapping between 8 different angles ).

Making them models will allow me to do things like have ragdolling, armor and attachments being much easier ( Just attaching it to the skeleton vs. having to redraw a sword from several different angles )

Not to mention giving the models 3d depth will allow for them to physically connect with the player in a way that billboarded graphics don't really allow.


I think I could still have billboarded graphics at the least for objects half the size of the player character, things like mice and table decorations.

I'm in the same spot myself. I recently did a year in Uni for CS and I enjoyed the computer courses, however they force you to take a bunch of classes that I wasn't particularly interested in, so I dropped out. To be fair, pixel art at smaller scales is more about abstraction ("how can I make the eyes look good with this many pixels?"), where as traditionally something like that usually isn't an issue.

I have an artist who draws them for me so i'm not best suited to answer that question but I make basic changes to the sprites in photoshop such as thicker outlines using strokes and stuff like that but for the most part they aren't recolored from a template. We used this as a base for our own

Then you are probably having difficulty thinking about how to fool people into thinking a small array of colored dots represents something specific.

Go back and look at some games you are interested in and see how they do it. Or, you could always do larger sprites/painted sprites. People like hand drawn animation especially if it's good, and if it is good your game is pretty much guaranteed to get some kind of recognition.
