I haven't played the One Piece games so I don't know how they compare to the mainline stuff but the main differences between the Gundam Musou games and mainline is that the games are more focused around capture points (much like the Empire games). Mechanically, the jump button is replaced with a boost button that can be used to cancel out of attacks would be the major difference from the 3 kingdoms based games. If you want to try one, avoid the 3rd game because the map design was the worst of the series something the 4th and latest game (Reborn) fixes. Obviously the game is a lot more enjoyable if you're a fan of the IP though.

I wouldn't call it realistic, the older games still just boiled down to spamming whichever charge attack had the most hits, the difference was rigid movement, no real escape tools and the simple fact that a good 50% of the roster either sucked shit at clearing waves of peons or killing officers, they were usually only good at one or the other.

I think the concept is disks that allow you to access the original game's content by switching disks specifically. Its dumb as shit though and at this point with how accepted DLC is there's not much reason it should even be a concern anymore, but Koei only makes the worst ripoff DLC instead.

The peons in 4 are almost too aggressive on higher difficulties. It helps make some levels such as Zhu Rong's legend a nightmare without the reduced AI difficulty bug, and it limits some of the moves you can do on that difficulty if you don't want to get yourself horribly murdered. Especially the ones with elemental True Musous - they usually boil down to spamming Vorpal TMs all day.
Still rather fun once you've got the items and stats to hang on Expert difficulty.

Zhou Tai is just the silent, stoic big guy. Fits his bodyguard character perfectly.
Wei Yan is truly a shame though, considering he was one of Shu's best generals, especially after Liu Bei died.
They'll never change Wei Yan at this point, there have been too many games with him being an illiterate barbarian and they probably think his character has grown on the fans or something.

For one i love the setting
To add to that, the series has actually pretty interesting interpretations of classic characters. DW's Liu Shan is very mucha fascinating spin on someone who was villified through centuries.
Also it's a very therapeutic experience overall. Just brainlessly hack some peons for an hour and most of your troubles go away
