Imo, no. There was another thread here earlier where I said that after playing this game, I can't go back and enjoy the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games as much as before. I feel like this game has a lot more depth both story-wise and in terms of gameplay, and I kind of like that it's not as whimsical or childish as HM/RF. If you're unsure, go ahead and emulate a couple HM/RF games to see if you like that kind of style. SV is pretty much the same, but a little more fleshed out.

I would say play Rune Factory 3 and maybe Frontier (I never played 4, but 3 was a very nice, streamlined game with a lot of very whimsical dialogue), but skip Harvest Moon altogether. Stardew Valley is a step in the right direction to be honest for this kind of game and it really is an evolution of the genre.
I don't even know what I prefer, this or RF, and I say that as a guy who truly loves the RF series.

For Harvest Moon, most people on /v/ and /vg/ recommend to play Friends of Mineral Town, which I agree with. On the newer games, the tutorials are excessively long, and not much new content has been added.
Not sure what to recommend for Rune Factory, though, as I've only played 1 and two. But, it's basically a fantasy spin-off of Harvest Moon (both series are developed by Natsume), with a bit of combat.

I agree with this. The formula for Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games has been repeated so many times, it's become quite stale. Stardew Valley was similar enough to the other two franchises to feel familiar, but different enough to be refreshing.
