Right now I'm working on some research that I believe will indicate that sexualized female characters only negatively affects game-related self efficacy in women when the sexualization is out of context. For example, women who play Second Life intentionally pick super slutty costumes because it's a social "game" where-as, in a study that found (and was also poorly conducted in terms of instrumentation) women who played a sexualizaed version of Lara Croft in Tomb raider had lower general self efficacy, the context of the game (platforming in a dress) was incongruous. In context, sexualized armor should mean nothing.

In order of harshness of judgement, it went: women shown vidya images, women shown congresscreatures, men shown congresscreatures, men shown vidya images. That is, men who were primed with GTA were more sympathetic to the professor in the story, and women who were primed with GTA were more sympathetic to the undergrad in the story.
To me this suggests that people who were primed with exciting imagery were more inclined to "take on the role" of "their character" in the story. The men in this group probably basically thought, the professor didn't have any actual power over her, he made one pass, got turned down, and the girl freaked the fuck out. Rather than viewing this pretty ambiguous situation in a clinical, "how would university administration feel about this," they probably looked at it more of, "what would it be like to be one of these characters?" The fact that the study authors are totally unsympathetic to the character of the professor really just shows their own bizarre bias.

I play both male and female characters in every game I play if I have the choice. It doesn't bother me if I play a female character but you always get the players, especially in MMOs who keep bugging you and or bring up the topic as to why I play a female character if I'm a guy. For the sheer fact it annoys them to that extent it more so shows that they're confused in some way about their own feelings.
However, if I play FF14 and someone is wearing that speedo outfit in a dungeon on a guy or putting the G-String on a guy in Dragons Dogma it becomes a little annoying and gross to an extent but not to rage quitting or irritable levels for me to do something about it.
Interestingly enough, most woman aren't usually bothered by seeing other woman naked or doing things together that guys would ever do, it only ever becomes a problem when one of them doesn't look "attractive" enough compared to their peers that it becomes a issue; which is where I feel that tumblr and these other sort of people stem from.
I don't have a problem seeing some badass guy getting all the girls, it more so drives me to exercise more and become more fit and healthy so I can become like that. Where as if a woman sees a attractive woman they become scornful, jealous, and start to flip their shit.

People have been collecting sets of armors since Vanilla. It doesn't even need to be a RP Server to see people walking around in the Main Cities wearing these types of clothing, when people were waiting for their Raid to start they'd be jumping around IF and SW in their collected armor, side-walk/jumping up walls to get to areas in IF most people didn't know how to dancing.
They also use to get the Barbarian Sets on Twink Characters with supped up Enchanted Weapons on lower-level characters; killing people almost instantly and then taunting them in their half-naked armor.
If you think woman don't play games or even WoW then you severely need to Guild hop more and just start talking to people.
