Not really, Metroid model of exploration has some neat quirks, like being able to get to Kraid through walljumping rather than through itemization but in most cases you're just being railroaded into backtracking. It's a gameplay style that's heavily reliant on keys (another word for items) and your progress is constantly being impeded to disguise the linearity of it.

Toki Tori 2 has improved on the formula.

>>342723068
What makes it so great? I didn't play much because the pacing was completely off due to ludicrous amount of exposition married with endless tutorial section.

Please don't use words like "comfy", I'm talking about mechanics and map design. I don't even think the art design is good, it came during heyday of low poly age and its models lack finesse other 3D games had.

Other games improving the Metroid formula does not mean SM didn't age like wine.

>>
>>342724605
To be fair you can avoid literally 95% of backtracking if you can do basic sequence breaking and have a well planned route

Yeah sure aged fine,it has like a million useless items that serve no fucking purpose like what the fuck am i going to do with 200 missiles and 50 super missiles when my the upgraded charge shot does more damage, also you don't have any indication on how to get to maridia you just have to buy a fucking guide or nintendo power AND it also doesn't have ingame controlls so you have to have a manual or go to the net to learn how to "metroid crawl" and walljump

It doesn't suck. You are in control of the camera at near all times. If it's in a bad position, it's because you've failed to move it to a good position. The only areas where this doesn't apply is in the sub levels, like the pyramid or the igloo, where the camera is objectively shit.

Compare this to Galaxy, where you rarely have any control over the camera, and when you do your control is extremely limited, and SM64's camera is superior.

(Sunshine has the best camera though, as you always have unlimited freedom to put it wherever you want.)

>>
>>342727216
I really love this game but you can't deny it has aged badly.
Chrono Trigger is a better exemple of great aging IMO. FFVI has too many random phases (especially at the beginning) and difficulty spikes to be considered a game which aged well.
Still a must play and one of the best RPG of its era.

>art design not good
Ocarina of Time was the first video game to have facial animations, and faces that didn't look like cardboard.

If you can't appreciate even that much, you're a millennial baby. I don't mean it as a buzzword. I mean you are really what the word means. If it wasn't made after the iPhone you can't enjoy it unless you grew up with it. Tell me I'm freaking wrong and did not just peg your entire sense of artistic evaluation in one sentence.

I'm not going to pamper the rest of your post, but it's popular because it's a good game that cumulatively does everything well, whereas other games focus on one thing, but suck at everything else.
>>
>>342725706
As with every Matsuno game, after the first third everything devolves into ridiculously powerful characters finding counters for one another, and the player gets railroaded into a rock paper scissors playstyle.

It's like a tedious version of Fire Emblem with better art and less tactical effort (positioning isn't as punishing, no way).
>>
>>342729126
Animations have little to do with art design. I'd continue replying were it not for the meme image and the "millenial baby" part proclaiming you unable to hold your side of the argument.
>>
>>342727216
I just finished up FFIV. Loved the game, but fuck the random encounter rate. How are V and VI? They're the last ones I haven't played. IV had great characters, areas, combat and story, but the exploration is really fucking hampered by constant random battles. They used the "each step has a certain chance of triggering a battle" formula instead of the racing generated value between two fixed numbers, which completely fucked up the rate.
>>
>>342729749
V is the best 2D FF by a noticeable margin

Somebody please help. I have a vivid memory that brings me great nostalgia.
I remember playing a game 10+ years ago (might have been on a demo disc) and all i remember is running through a very large open field
with a small cave entrance in the side of the mountain and i remember fighting little creatures. I can't remember specific details just the open low poly landscape and it was
very green. Could it have been a Zelda game? I remember playing as a little boy character and i seem to remember there being a large bad guy in the opening cutscene.

they changed a whole bunch of mechanics
>>
>>342731924
Aside from messing with mechanics a bit they fucked the art direction a little more. In OOT it's largely a straight upgrade with the only real changes being in the Shadow Temple I think. In MM in general a lot of colours are much brighter, the moon looks super goofy, NO RAINBOW STAIRS in the Astral Observatory, and all bosses have these goofy big Majora's eyeballs.

There's probably more I'm forgetting, but overall the game just looks a lot less offputting and foreboding now.

But it's not because Sonic Adventure tried to stray away from the original Sonic formula unlike OOT which expands on it.

Why has Zelda 1 aged poorly? Because Link to the Past improves on it in every single way. Same thing for OOT. Better gameplay, better music, better dungeons, more content, more immersive etc.

IDK about you but that was a game from my middleschool era that my freinds had to beat every year to 2005

I think its safe to say it is like wine
I can even play it now
Fuck anything past windwaker
It was rotten pus filled milk when you first play the game.

>>342740231
AoE2 HD is great. assume you already played the original since you got one for your dad. no game beats AoE2 in Dadcore games
>>
>>342740646
>without this game paper mario could never be gutted of all this games gameplay and watered down to the point of not wanting to play it.
>>
>>342729951
This game is 10/10, but hard as shit on original hardware
>>
>>342740779

Yes, the graphics have aged like shit (and we're possibly bad even for it's time), but the gameplay has aged like a fine Merlot.

can you just take your horrible opinions and shit taste and put a bullet in your skull please?
>>
>>342740307
Ninja Gaiden has so many technical problems but instead of trying to fix them the devs used them purposefully to fuck you over harder. having only 1 jump height kills the game
>>
>>342740656

I came from the 8bit/16bit era and the "64"bit era for me was filled with PC games. I do feel pity for all the kids who had to endure OoT as their first Zelda game though.

I found that the prequel is much better at aging despite being inferior
>>
Without this game
>>342741035
Would not exist yet you forget to post the superior game that inspired the game that killed fps games
>>
>>342741237
If you posted PD instead, I believe you
>>

I like challenging games
Fuck anyone who does not like them

PD and 007 were both as significant imo

It will never stop being perfect.

I want another so bad. It hurts.

the ending sounds like house of the rising sun
>>
>>342741437
While Goldeneye was more well known, Perfect Dark is the better game.

More so if you didn't have any friends, since it bots you can play against in MP.
>>
>>342741340
are you saying that having the birds that spawn mid way through your hail mary jump for the next ladder are good game design?
>>
>>342741103
We would be the same age because ghosts n goblins was the first game i ever played

ZELDA 1 being the first zelda i played
I got a shitty computer when i was 6-7 and i didnt upgrade till highschool so late 1990s shit didnt come my way pc wise
>>
>>342741237

git gud faggot
>>
>>342741613
I am saying that punishing gameplay makes games more worthwhile because once you do complete things it feels better as a reward compared to something that is easy
>>
>>342741684
ITS still way better then halo you idiot dont you fucking see my response
>>
>>342738951
Dis you even put the disc in upside down?

Seriously how new do you have to be to know that the Dreamcast had its laser mounted on the lid.
>>
>>342741701

Only if you're a collectorfag, and love having a physical game on your shelf.

I'd advise you to play it on original hardware because of the combo timings though. A GBA flashcart would be perfect.

Cmon man is not that bad.

They added some cool mechanics
>>
>>342741437
PD was and still is a better game. I found it more memorable.
>>
>>342727216
This. FFVI has aged remarkably well
>>
>>342742407

OK, well you might want to get a repro of the game. I'm sure you can find it elsewhere for cheaper though.

good thing, getting drunk off wine is the only way to deal with the repetitive music and constant backtracking

Zelda1 was my first in the series too and I'd probably say Frogger was the first game I can remember playing (besides SMB). I had ok PCs in the late 80s/early 90s since my dad liked PC gaming in that time and I got my own PC around 96 and a PS1 a year or so after that.
